Successful install: Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 Preview onto HP ProLiant N40L MicroServer

By: John Stutsman

I finally got Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 Preview to install successfully onto an HP ProLiant N40L MicroServer after disabling the on-board NIC and using Intel NIC add-on cards. Read about it in the thread: Anyone Successfully install Server 2012 R2 Essentials on a MicroServer?

Many thanks to DieHard who got this to work a week earlier by disabling the on-board NIC and sent me step-by-step instructions via Twitter!

  1. Have you tried using the WIndows ADK to integrate the onboard NIC's driver into the install.wim image?

    Hi Drashna!

Mr_Smartepants in the Forums has been working with the Windows ADK for Win 8.1 (and Server 2012 R2)

Hi Andy! Eventually, HP should release updated drivers but they may be waiting till S2012R2 is generally available. Both of my test servers are tied up untill after the #MeetUp2013 but I know HSS-Dave has started trying to load it on his N54L last night and DieHard was going to start Today as I'm sure many others will be looking into it this week. I'd suggest jumping in the Forums where they will be posting their results:

Hey, I made a modded BIOS which should have 2012 R2 support with onboard NIC.
