I picked up one of the 1TB Blacks, that's just too good of a drive at that price. Can't beat a 5 year warranty.

  2. Octavean says:

I thought the WD “EARS” drives were Advanced Format drives and should be avoided due to alignment issues that effected overall performance in WHS. That WD 2TB drive is an “EARS” model.

  3. Homeserver says:

You are correct. The EARS models do have some WHS issues.

If anyone picked one of these up from my link just hit the contact form and let me know.

I'll pull the EARS model off the deal sheet. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

  4. Octavean says:

Well the issue with the WD “EARS Advanced Format drives isn’t debilitating. Apparently no one is going to lose data or have their WHS go up in smoke. If someone has one they may simply need to align the drive with a modified WD align utility to avoid the performance hit.

Its basically just an extra step, nothing to get overly concerned over IMO.

  5. Homeserver says:

That's true. I think most of the readers would be ok with installing one. Since I didn't point it out in the deal I'll take the high road and remove it. I think with a little help from the community and forums anyone could get it up and running.

If someone did purchase one let me know. It could be a good learning opportunity for all of us!
