KeepVault Connector for Windows Home Server.
KeepVault, the popular online storage Add-In for WHS has been updated to version 3.15. There are only a few changes from the last update but they are big changes.
Released version 3.15 (08/20/09)
• Improved upload speed (up to 50% faster)
• New KeepVault connector add-in for Windows Home Server (Sync files from any PC directly to your Windows Home Server for automatic protection)
• Small bug fixes and enhancements
I’m glad to see the upload speed has been improved but I don’t think it will make much difference to me since I only upload between 12 and 6 A.M. The second bullet is of interest to me though. On podcast 53 I discussed a listeners wish to synchronize files from office to home and this may be the answer. Read on.
You know I’m a big fan of KeepVault so let’s install 3.15 and take a look.
Here is the Version 3.10 Screen shot for reference but when I looked at the Add-In section of my Windows Home Server I noticed it said “KeepVault Connector.”
Here are my tabs under Settings now. Notice 2 KeepVault tabs. The installer did not put a tab on the top of the console.
Under the new tab you will see this screen:
Stay with me here. I’m clicking, learning, and writing all at the same time! Let’s download the client. When you click the “Download and install the client setup” link in the console it launches a browser with a link to the client file on your WHS. Example: http://hpserver/KeepVault
Notice the Windows 7 support as well as 64 bit. That’s a nice touch.
But! The following screen is not a 64 bit app and I’m on Win7 64.
I see a new share that has been installed on my WHS that houses the client files but it shows empty and in a RDP to the server it certainly look empty. Here is the exact link: http://hpserver/KeepVault/KeepVaultConnectorSetup.exe This is going to need more investigation but lets continue.
I went ahead with the install and I get this screen.
I like the top line that says I can sync on the road to my WHS. I entered the information that it needs and am greeted with the next screen.
It looks like I’m all set. I’ll give this a test and follow up to this post. I do have a few issues with this Add-In as you can tell by reading.
Is there a 64 bit version?
When I downloaded the initial add in it was named the same as the KeepVault for Windows Home Server. So there is potential for getting confused or overwriting your previous download.
The files sync to the KeepVault share right? So I can enable duplication on this right? I assume so.
Is the Internet sync using a specific port to do this transfer? Just curious.
Head over to keepvault.com and get started with synchronizing your files to your WHS!
UPDATES:
Thanks to a quick response from Dan R. over at Proxure(KeepVault) I have answers to my questions!
- The application is 64-bit compatible – we don’t really gain much from being 64-bit native
- The WHS KeepVault Backup and KeepVault Connector applications are delivered as a combined download. We decided this would be the easiest approach for most users
- You can delete the share, but make sure to uninstall the Connector addin before deleting the share or it will recreate it.
- It uses HTTPS (port 443) for upload – it doesn’t download – yet! J Really today it’s more of a one way archive of files from PCs to the WHS. Although with our www.keepsync.com experience two-way sync is something we can do if there’s a strong demand for it.

Nice post Dave. I'm going to go see how much Keep Vault costs. I am trying out free solutions, but they all require using another person's PC to make it work. If it's the right price, it could be a good fit.
I installed 3.15 over 3.1 and it removed the 3.1 tab from the Console Tab and added it to the Settings view as KeepVault Backup 3.1 not 3.15 as you have in your article, so I uninstalled and reinstalled, now I get the 3.15 Tab along the top & under settings.
After installing the connector and choosing a folder, it just hangs, says 657 files left to sync, Syncronizing files. I checked the Console to see that KeepVault Connector Server is ON. From the Console, My Online Backup Job, I see D:sharesKeepVault Connector as Protected. This folder does NOT show up in My Local Backup Job. looks like it's online backup only.
[...] It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of KeepVault. The $89 price tag comes out to $7.42 per month for online storage. How can you argue with $7 bucks for peace of mind? You will also get some cool features that include local backup capabilities as well as the KeepVault Connector. [...]
