Okay, so I know I'm a SageTV fanboy, but after listening to your tortuous description of how you want your media center system to work together, your usecase screams out SageTV. You should really take a look at it and see if it fits your needs. Of course Sage isn't for everybody (although, the soon to be announced Cablecard enabled HD-Homerun could change all of that), but it is a good solution for many.
