Yeah that’s rather high. However, to qualify that statement its that Canada has fewer shipping options which are higher in priced. Correct?

I’ve seen a return of high CPU usage on my new EX490. I took a closer look at the processes and the highest resource utilization seems to be coming from “w3wp.exe (up to about 25%”, “HpmssService.exe (up to about ~60% at times)” and oddly enough “System Idle Process”. Interestingly enough, no Twonky activity to speak of since I haven’t feed it any music and such yet.

My concern is that the EX47x series wont have the CPU prowess to deal with the way the server will be loaded under the MSS 3.0 update. Unless the this update is somehow different, I would suspect that there will be a lot of complaints about high CPU utilization.

***edit***

Also, for what its worth, I’m starting to look at the HP MSS software as more of a consolidated front end for other applications. In essence an add-in supported by a number of other prerequisite programs ~90% likely not HP in origin.

My feeling is that the easiest and most secure way for HP to release the 3.0 update was via DVD. Installing this way is probably the most reliable (via image on optical media). However, it does seem possible IMO to have released the MSS 3.0 update as a free downloadable patch like the earlier 1.3 and 2.5 updates. The problem there is the installed environment and prerequisite supporting software programs.

So they would have had to level the playing field somehow before going this route but it would have been possible.

you can install a modem and have it answer your calls after a certain amount of rings. you can check your vm by picking up the phone and dialing a number, and it can email it to you. you need it to run in a Virtual Machine though... good luck!

From what I gather, looks like the v3 update is not ready to be released. Some suggest that HP didn't want to announce another delay so they decided to take orders, then send emails saying they are having issues with distribution. I'm sure they did not anticipate how many people wanted this update. Bummer.

Maybe someone else has a more positive response.

Then there is the big mess on pricing, $64 to Canada, ouch. I'm a bit disappointed, when I hear that a smaller company like Tranquil is making their WHS OS including all updates and PP3 is available for download.

Okay, new to the forums here but I think I can add some insight to this issue. DHCP has several parts to the puzzle. The scope, which is the total number of addresses available by the gateway (router) and with most SOHO routers, the scope would be 254 available addresses.
The Lease time is defined by the user and this is the time the address is made available to the client. Halfway thru the lease period the client basically tells the host, "hey, I'm still here so let me have that address again.
So given those facts, you can have any number of non-fixed clients on the LAN and as long as they do not all try to renew their leases at one time, static addressing is not necessary. DHCP reservations are the way to .
I work in a very large environment and the only time we use static addressing are for servers and VTC devices.

My router of choice, Linksys WRT54G

@dvn: I am very sure that the Static routing options are not for IP address assignments. They are for adding custom entries to the routing table, which is a very advanced setting for network admins.

Like I said, if it's not broken, you could just choose to leave it alone. The trouble is that it might cause strange issues later which will be hard to troubleshoot if you don't remember that you did something to the routing. My advice is to remove those settings since they are not needed.

I'm talking about static IP addresses, yes. And yes, I'm adjusting static IP addresses in my router because that is how I've been able to keep other machines from accidentally grabbing the static IP that I've assigned to a couple machines. It works well, as I believe it was intended. AJ made some observations and I tried following them, as I am not too strong on networking. But in the end, I am leaving it as I had previously set it - PC NIC's are static assigned, router is reserving those static IP's within the DHCP range. This is a working solution, and I have not, at least to my understanding, had any problem with it.

@Roddy, in my router, there is no Address Reservation section. I don't think the manual is current. What I have is a tab called Static Routes. Now if I'm doing QoS, which I am using to control some of the torrent users in the household, I enter their MAC's in that case. But with Static Route, I believe I'm just saying to DHCP to pull these particular IP addresses from its available pool of assignable addresses.

@ITTOG - Yes, I like the Netgear. They seem to work well and give me the functionality that I need. The wireless users saw a bit of an increase in signal strength with the N even though their computers are G wireless. If I were to buy another router, I'd be looking at something that supports dual-band. I have to read up on it, but I remember making a mental note to myself that not all wireless-N routers are the same in this aspect. Some can facilitate traffic better and more efficiently. The Apple Airport was mentioned as a top router in this respect, but it's pricey. I'll look for something more in my price range.

@dvn: My concurrent streams test was using two ~2Mbps media streams (anime) and this is typical usage for me. I had one wired and one wireless connection, but my guess is it didn't really matter since I wasn't topped out.

Anyway, my point was that my files really did not have any significant fragmentation to speak of, as reported by PD itself. I doubt that even with larger files, which I do have, I would not have been limited by fragmentation issues.

Of course, I stated before, this is just my personal experience. My advice probably is do the trial, and if you like the results, buy in. If not, then at least you learned something.

@dvn: I suspect I'm not reading you right, but are we talking about static IP addresses? You seem to be adjusting the static routing options on your router, but does that really have some effect on your client's IP address?

According to the documentation, that option shouldn't be needed unless your routing setup is nonstandard. I take that to mean multiple subnets or something funny like that, so it's not something the average user needs to mess with.

Anyway, if it works, maybe it would be best to just leave it alone. If you notice any strange effects or things not working, you could then try to revert to standard settings and just configure the IP address on the client. That's what I would do (am doing).

Edit: After a little more digging, here's a link that might help if you want to set up static IP from the router end.

@ttremeth: Just clarifying, when you say "playing it locally is almost perfect" does that mean playing it on the WHS? Or copying the file to the media PC and playing from there? There are other possibilities which we can try to rule out one at a time.

You need to stick to the standards for wiring your cables to reduce the chance of cross-talk. When you wired like this:

I used (o/w is orange/white)...
o/w-o, b/w-b, g/w-g, b/w-b

You no longer had the advantage of the twisted pair for you blue/w-b and green/w-g wires. This was likely creating cross talk at the higher frequencies so the system automatically adjusts.

One other thing that occurred to me. If you ever ended up hooking up something that need PoE (power over ethernet), you don't want to take a chance forgetting your wiring isn't to spec and end up frying something valuable.

Just an update - the fix (Disabled the UNHP feature on my router, applied a static IP address on the server side, forwarded ports 80, 443, and 4125 to my server's new static IP address) is still working and has not broken yet!

Can't be sure of the exact version but I am open, I will give it another shot. Maybe the second time will be better. But in reality, I am quite happy with list mode, after all we it is pretty much esthetics after that. One thing I do not like is the lack of control in terms of not being able to remove start up screens and previews.

My MyMovies experience mirrors that of usacomp2k3; no to low overhead, has found most of my movies (95%+), and is pretty straight forward.

pcdoc, have you tried it since they released 3.0. I never tried it before then so not sure what it used to be like. The only think I don't like about it is it doesn't play blu-ray without having a 3rd party blu-ray player like power dvd, THT 3, etc.

dvn,
how do you like the netgear router? I am thinking about switching from my Cisco WRT54GS to the Netgear WNDR3700 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5216410&csid=ITD&body=MAIN) but am leary about moving from Cisco because I have always used Cisco. The Cisco I have been looking at is the WRT400N, http://www.shoplinksys.com/Wireless-N-Simultaneous-Dual-Band-Router-WRT400N-Coupon-Activated-LBCNY2010_stcVVproductId63012282VVcatId551359VVviewprod.htm.

I'd be interested to hear if demigrator is the culprit because as AJ pointed out you are not using dup, nor do you have a 2nd drive. Without those, I don't think demigrator has a job.

dvn -

Absolutely, there is little on the server at this point. I'm still in the process of loading things onto it, so I suppose I'll just pass through the original drive size and this cosmetic error will just go away. Thanks!

1.34 TB is the actual size of the 1.5 TB. Pooled drives total the sum all the drives in the pool. But Windows can only recognize 1 drive in this case. So it's saying you have [pool size] on this single drive. I'm assuming you have very little on that server as of that screen shot.

Hello -

Sorry if this has already been posted somewhere, I searched but could not find anything.

I added a second hard drive to my new EX495 yesterday (a new 1.0 TB to go with the 1.5 TB in it, totalling 2.5 TB of space).

Everything seemed to go fine yesterday, the drive was "added" in the console and the console itself is very happy with it. But now a mapped drive to the WHS from my Win7 PC shows the following:

I'm not sure where both pieces of information are coming from. It's almost as if the free space count is coming from the WHS, and the available is coming from some sort of "old memory" of what the share size was pre-install. To check this, I disconnected the drive and re-mapped it ... same result.

At the end of the day I can still copy files to/from it okay. But it's just a little bit annoying to open up My Computer and have this drive "error" staring back at me.

Thanks for any help!

Brett
