Hey folks,

Here is what I really need to know...

What, Where and How do you use to listen to the podcast:

1) Do you download them and listen in car?, Bus, Bike, at breakfast?
2) Do you listen live? or record and listen when you can?
3) What do you use to extract these PodCast from the web, do you manually download or use some neat program that stacks them nicely on your WHS?

I would love to use an automatic downloader instead of having to manually down loading them one by one.

any suggestions?

Octavean,

Thanks for your insight. diehard also suggested a 2TB system drive and that makes sense to me.

I have a 4 bay external enclosure but may get a 5 bay in the future (or sooner if I see one on sell and the impulse strikes).

A.J.

I have a 4 bay SATA Rosewill (RSV-S4-X) setting in reserve. In the beginning, I threw all of the 500GB and 250GB drives, on hand, into the server and life was good. Then, I discovered the "joys" of ripping my DVDs, HD DVDs, and Blu-Rays (See, I left out the "E"). Next was the great idea of archiving the Wife's TV shows (her idea) followed by saving my own favorites. Before you know it, the pool is filling up fast and I buy the Rosewill 4 Bay and start filling it with various drives. Over time, I bought bigger drives on sale and put the Rosewill on Sabbatical

What I get out of this exercise is, that from now on, I will buy the largest dam* harddrives I can find for server use.

You and I are in about the same boat. I just ordered and received an HP MSS EX490 and I am migrating from a DIY WHS build.

1) My major concern is installing something that would prevent logging onto the server due to some dialog error message or such. Normally this wouldn’t be a concern with a DIY but since the MSS is headless it could be debilitating (without an expensive KVM cable or server restore). A little like, being hospitalized for a paper cut. So yeah I would be very careful with non-add-in software installs.

2) what I would have done differently would probably be replacing the System drive with a 2TB model to start off with. I already had one 2TB WD Green WD20EADS HDD so I could have just swapped that with the Seagate 1TB (in your case Seagate 1.5TB). This way it would be easier to migrate to all 2TB drives later on.

3) Lately I have been favoring the WD Green WD20EADS HDD and now have two.

4) depending on what you want to do with the server but I think it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on your HDDs so I would suggest HomeServer SMART or something similar. BDBB as well.

Once I fully retire my old WHS DIY build I can recover three 1TB HDDs so I may be looking into an eSATA external enclosure. Personally I kind of wish HP made one of these as well.

Like AJ said, you are close to your limit, so you should start off with replacing the 1.5TB system drive with a 2TB. So that will gain you 500GB. Better do this when you start then later. Use the old system drive as part of the pool. If you do this, you will have to do a server recover right from the start since the new system drive is blank, only add the ols system drive after the install has completed and ou have all the updates, then add it to tray 4 and configure it in the Console as a pooled drive and format it. Now you should have 7.5TB

As AJ suggests, if you are near capacity, a eSATA external enclosure is the next step. Icy Dock makes a nice unit, I haven't seen if they have a 5 bay JBOD, you can also look at Sans Digital. They have a 5 bay eSATA external. They do have a 8 bay external, however that requires 2 eSATA connection on your server, but the HP EX49x/x510 only have 1.

Let us know when you get going and we'll fill your head with more stuff. :-)

Yeah, I'd highly recommend getting the biggest capacity/drive, even at a slight price premium. Considering that you have a max of 8TB internal and you are close to that already. Have you looked into getting an external eSATA enclosure for more drives? The ex49* series supports up to 5 drives on the port-multiplier eSATA.

Currently how many drives do you have ? what sizes ?"

Right now, I have five 1TB and one 1.5TB Seagate drives in the "homebuilt".

I am leaning toward adding three 2TB drives, to the EX495, in the "green" flavour suggested by A.J.

1/ I'd make sure the HP collector and Twonky are turned off when you set it up. Give it >12 hours after moving all your data to let things settle down before turning them on (if at all).
3/ I like the Greenpower hard drives. They run at a lower spindle speed (~5400rpm) than most 3.5" hard drives and so are quieter and consume less power.

Ok, after much debate (impulse buy) I purchased a EX495 from Amazon to be delivered tomorrow. I have been on a frankenbuild for a little over a year with only a few minor issues. The "homebuilt" will become a test box.

What I would like to know is,

1. Pitfalls, what to watch out for or be wary of.
2. Your setup, is there anything you would have done different?
3. What harddrives to use.
4. Which addins are must haves.

I am presently running a 6TB pool (80% full) used mostly for TV and Movie archives and, streaming to HTPCs. I have never used addins and stream straight from the connector.

All input is welcome.

Yep that is true I could bind then and place them back on the shelf. I wonder what google does when they scan all their books?

Regarding the question, the DVDs that I have copied on my WHS I keep in my closet. I guess I keep them since copying them is not destructive and the physical space required to store them is very small.

Hard core man,….hard core!

However, I would just add that once this is done, the books aren’t necessarily destroyed. One could use a binder machine and have a spiral or other form of binding on these books in short order and at no great expense.

I’ll put it another way:

If you had a collection of home movies that you had on DVD and that you copied onto you WHS do you:

a) Toss away the DVD’s thinking you’ll never need them again

b) Place the DVD’s in a safe place in case of server failure

Sometimes there seems to be a bit of a delay for me. I’ll see that the latest pod cast is up and I’ll often try to manually download it directly on my iPod Touch via iTunes and it wont have the latest pod cast listed. Not a big deal I just wait a little longer.

Anyway, good show. It moved along nicely and had a good format. The reviews are a nice addition and certainly relevant with respect to Icy Doc and the WHS community. I have to think that when you received the review units you were thinking “I can’t believe they sent these things to us”.

Funny bit about the Survey. No female listeners isn’t exactly a big shock I guess. If you want female listeners you may have to actually add a Women to the show!

***edit***

LOL, I guess the Wives’ wouldn’t be up for joining the crew ;)

Yea it is a bummer that I have to de-bind the books, but I don't see it as destryoing them. To me a book is a container of information and if that is in physical or digital form, the information is still there. Additionally having it digitally opens up new features such as being able to access them from my remote access website and OCR... and I guess if you like audio books, maybe there is a piece of software out there that is capable of reading OCR to you like an audio book :)

Additionally I move quite frequently and lugging around all those text books from undergrad and grad school gets old.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Yes I do. Primarily because I fall asleep after reading a page or two. It is horrible. I also see it as a huge time waster because I can't multitask. I do not use eBooks either because that is still reading. I am a huge fan of audio books though. Any time I am in the car, I am listening to a book. The wife hates it but I think she is used to it now.

DVBLink is what you are looking for. It is made by DVB Logic

The tuner-sharing isn't quite function for US users last I checked.

You hate to read?!?!?! We have a dedicated library in our house and routine add 5-10 books a weekend at garage sales and another 20-50 at the bi-annual Friends of the Library book sale. I'm not a fan of eBooks and probably never will be.

I like the idea though. I might check out that device. Would make scanning quite simple. I do have a flatbed with an ADF, but I haven't actually used it ever (was a gift from a friend).

I use it on my WHS and all 3 home computers and my work computer. I use it almost exclusively for the Remote Desktop aspect. (I seem to recall that it uses the remote assistance protocol?). I'm logged into my WHS from work for 9 hours/day to get around the NCF (Nazi Content Filter).

You made a great choice with that scanner, it's really fast and is the top recommended brand suggested by Digital Archound. http://digitalarchound.com/page1009.aspx

Windows Media Connect is like Twonky. It scans and indexes your media files to make them available to streamers. It's not as powerful as Twonky. If you have Twonky, you should turn 1 of them off, or better yet set it to manual. If you disable Windows media connect, WHS will complain about it. So it runs in the backgroup to keep your available shared media up to date.

If you decide to set it to manual, remote into your server, when your there, Start, right click My Computer, manage, expand the last tab Services and Applications, Services, look for Windows Media Connect Service and right click, select properties, Under the General Tab go to the pull down menu and change it to Manual, click on stop. OK. Close the boxes.

You might also have to go into the WHS Console, Settings, Media Sharing and set the buttons to OFF. Since I have Twonky with my HP box, that is what I have done. Or else you will see your server as 2 media streaming devices. Also your doubling up on the indexing stuff, which as you can hear, gets annoying.

If you do this, your files will no longer be available for your xbox.
