Have you tried creating a Homegroup on the Windows 7 machine, then join the Windows 8 machine to the new Homegroup?

I can't do that either. The existing Homegroup is detected on my network so I cannot create a new one and I don't know the password to join the existing one.

There appears to be a Homegroup trouble shooting app built into Windows 8;

Looking, but not finding anything helpful yet. Most of the problems involve just leaving the Homegroup...which I can't do.

Thanks, but my problem is not fixed yet.

Neither of the PC's that I am using are joined to the Homegroup, including the PC that I originally created the Homegroup on when it was Windows 7. The problem is that now that it is Windows 8, my user account is different. When I go into Homegroups it tells me that one was setup by the old user account that was on this PC but that user does not exist anymore.

So I have no way to find out what the password was since no computers are joined to it. I cannot create a new Homegroup since both computers think that one already exists on my network.

I have shared the printer on the Win 7 PC, but I am still unable to see it on the Win 8 PC so that is why I am trying to get the Homegroup to work...

Thanks pcdoc. I am probably going to take the 2 drive route and mirror them for now since that will hold all of my personal media for the time being. Then I will just move the drive from my v1 box as I copy my data over and create other array.

No-control, thanks for your suggestions. Looking and the case and the MOBO, they look like they will work for me and save me a few bucks. I pretty much just choose the Z68 because I saw it recommended in a post somewhere and went from there. And the case, I just took the easy way out and chose what I already have that does work for me. The extra money will actually allow me to buy a couple of new switches and cables to upgrade my network.

My use case is pretty standard. Mostly it will be for file serving, backups and streaming media. At this point I don't need to do any transcoding. I do see running a VM or two on it so I probably will just go for the 8GB of RAM.

I built my v1 box less than two years ago and expected it to last longer than this (my original intent was to to upgrade it to 2011). I have had a few issues with it. One of them due to the add-on SATA controller that I bought for it. It just seems a little flaky. I few times my drives have disappeared and I had to re-seat the card to get them to show up again. Now I am having a problems with some files only transferring at about 3.5MB/s, which does NOT work for streaming Blu-Rays!! I posted about that in another thread.

So instead of trying to figure out what the problem is with the other server, I am just going to build a new one and hopefully it will be a lot more solid.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I am close to a final parts list and will hopefully be ordering parts in the next week...time permitting.

Pcdoc, another question...

If I just get 2 of the WD Red drives and mirror them for now, when I get a 3rd drive can I just break the mirror and change it to a RAID 5 without losing the data or do the drives get wiped when the array is getting built?

Of course only with only 2TB it would easy enough to copy to another drive if I had too.

Just trying to work on my budget and since I really don't NEED that much additional storage (however much 3x 2TB is in RAID 5) right now it is an option.

Thanks,
John

Thanks pcdoc, I guess I will HAVE to go with the 2720. I looked at so many motherboards and some were ATX and some were Micro ATX so I guess I didn't really notice once I actually settled on one. I will look over my other selections because I agree that the Micro would be better. And thanks for the info on the breakout cable.

Renny, that is a good idea about the RAM. I run VM's on my primary desktop sometimes, but it might be nice to put them on the WHS since it is always running! Will have to see where that fits in the budget though...
