I'm not sure how many here are local to the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area. But, if you are, the MGC is a show that should not be missed no matter what kind of gaming you're into. It is an incredible mix of all types of gaming with great opportunities to try out all kinds of things.

Sans Digital RAID enclosure

11 July 2011 - 08:10 AM

This is coming up as later today as part of Newegg's Shell-Shocker sales. Has anyone used this piece? It comes with a 5-drive enclosure that outputs via eSata. It looks like it has a nice fan in the back to pull air over the drives but photos don't tell the whole story. It also includes a PCIe card to connect that supports the multi-drive over single eSata connection protocols.

A few thoughts: I'm not 100% sure how I want to use this yet. For example, I may not necessarily want to RAID this. I may just want a bunch of drives as a media pool. Or, I may want to set-up 4 drives that are 2 sets of mirrors. I don't subscribe to the RAID5 concept (that's a whole different thread outside this scope). I'm thinking ahead right now.

This is normally $200 but will be something less later today.

Your thoughts?

Direct install from .iso?

19 April 2011 - 12:24 PM

When you're installing an OS from scratch, burning an ISO to an install disk makes sense.  But, what about when you are installing an application that is distributed by ISO (like alot of Technet files for instance).  Do you HAVE to burn it to disk?  Is there a way to access the contents of the ISO directly?  If not, how about a way to mount an ISO as a disk and then go from there?  If you need an external app to mount it, what is your favorite?

I KNOW someone has to have looked into this before...

Thanks,
Keith

Ok, how about homebrewers

11 April 2011 - 07:50 AM

I guess there aren't too many pinball collectors amongst the WHS enthusiast crowd. How about home brewers? From the people I've met and talked to, it seems to attract the technical/engineering types. So, anyone?

What do you have fermenting or serving right now?
