Hard Drive Issues, but no SMART events

02 April 2012 - 07:48 AM

This morning, I noticed my WHS 2011 box was sick. I couldn't connect to it and since it's a MediaSmart I can't connect a monitor. After a power-off/on cycle, I checked the Event Log and noticed lots of "Bad Sector" and "Relocated sector" errors on my boot drive. I checked the Home Server Smart add in (v2.2.3.17) and it shows the same 2 SMART errors which appearsed about 3 years ago...nothing new. Also Stablebit Scanner showed all drives as OK. I moved my data off, and during the moving, Windows event viewer continued to report Bad Sector errors.

I'm assuming the hard drive is in fact dying, but why don't the add-ins show the errors?

After running a backup, I'm going to have Stablebit scanner do another scan, then maybe I'll pull the drive and run it through SpinRite.

Any thoughts?......brian

WHS 2011 and EARS Drives - Jumper?

29 March 2012 - 06:47 PM

I just purchased couple of WD 2TB drives (WD20EARX).
My question should I install the jumper or not?
Also, when the drive is first seen by WHS, I'm asked if it should be partitioned as MBR or GDP.
Which should I pick?
I'm planning on using the drives in a Raid 1 in a microserver for user backup and shared folders.

....thanks....brian

I came across this deal for a Microserver.

It appears to be their regular price. They do ship to Canada.
I ordered one for our church.

Video Card Recommendation

27 November 2011 - 01:34 PM

My son has an old Dell tower running XP. He uses it for older simulator games which don't run well on Windows 7. He;d like to upgrade the video card to improve the performance and level of details in his games.

Here are the current specs:
- Code 2 6300 1.8ghz
- 2GB RAM
- Nvidia Geforce 7300LE with 512MB
- XP home
- Single 19" monitor

What ATI or Nvidia card would you recommend for this system? We're hoping to keep the cost below $100

Thanks.....brian
