NIC Teaming in Server 2012 Essentials

27 April 2013 - 12:55 AM

Just thought I would put this out there for the benefit of those that are not aware that 2012E natively supports NIC Teaming.

Christian over at theaverageguy.tv tipped me off to this, so I had an old GB nic PCI card laying around so put it in the server, enabled it and set up a new "team" in server manager which was dead easy to do.

Now getting circa 450M/s read and writes between the server and other PCs on the network through a GB switch: Happy days :D

So for my money, a great way to get extra, usable performance out of your server for cheap. Give it a go.

Best Practice query re DNS servers

13 March 2013 - 12:56 AM

Hi all

First up all is well with my home network, but a recent event with my wife's PC got me thinking.

First up, I am running WSE2012 but all clients are in Home Group mode (I'm a wimp I know)

My modem/Router points to my ISP's DNS Servers as primary and secondary.

My PC points to DYNDNS as I have a dynamic IP and it resolves to a ,com address for remote access. All good!

My wife's PC was having trouble resolving things like google, com or news.com.au in WE9 so I installed Chrome, same result.

Turns out her PC was pointed to the WSE machine for DNS which I presume was a hangover from opting out of the domain after the client connector was installed.

So I pointed the PC to my modem/router (10.1.1.1) and all seems to be good.

So my question is, is it better to set your DNS server on each PC as your access point or should I set the PC(s) to use an "external " address such as that of my ISP (which is the fastest) or DynDns, or Google etc)

Or, does it make no difference?

Your thoughts....

Scoping a 2012 Server essentials Build

23 October 2012 - 01:16 AM

In the coming weeks I plan on building a WSE 2012 box to take over the heavy lifting from my antiquated 2011 build.(E8200 core duo, Maxtor os HDD, etc)
Traditionally, all my old hardware gets cascaded into the server as I update my desktops and HTPCs, so with cash in hand I plan to build a nice server to run 2012 Essentials. I plan to recycle an old case of dubious provenance which will unfortunately not accommodate all the drives I propose.
Use case is pretty normal as follows:
  • 5TB total data (but need room to grow)
  • Back up 4 PCs+Server
  • Media streaming
  • Some "on the fly" media trans-coding/conversion (but I try to limit this)
  • Remote access
So here are my specs using gear I already own (O) and stuff I plan to purchase (P)

Mobo: Either Z68 or Z77 (O)
CPU: Either i5 2550 or i3 2130 (O)
OS Drive: 60 GB Agility 3 hosted on the mobo (O) If anyone has a foolproof way to get the OS onto this drive it would me much appreciated,
Pioneer BD Drive for ripping (O)
2x2TB green drives in external eSata Sans Digital TRMB4 box(O) for PC and Server backup respectively (O)
2x1TB Seagate 7200rpm Drives for movies and recorded TV in the Sans as well(O)
8GB DDR3 ram (O)......and now for the fun part

RocketRAID 640 4-Port SATA 6Gb/s PCI-E 2.0 x4 RAID HBA (P)
3x2TB WD Red Drives in Raid5 (P) for photos, music, docs, home videos hosted on the raid card.

From what I have read , Storage Spaces is a poor option hence my Raid 5 ambitions.
I can get out of this build for around A$600 delivered which is tolerable.

I know it may be a bit "over the top" for a server but any thoughts appreciated, but humor me if I am off the mark somewhere.

Cheers

Core2 Duo vs Core2 Quad

19 June 2012 - 02:49 AM

Like a lot of people I cascade my gear through a number of different builds. This means that a lot of my old stuff ends up in the WHS.
While I plan to pick up a bunch of parts for a new purpose built server on my trip to the US later this year, I would appreciate advice as to my current options to reconfigure my WHS 2011 build.
I am currently running a Core2 Duo E8200 with 8gb of DDR 2 ram.

I have a Core2 Quad 8200 in my wive's PC which is throwing a lot of different BSOD errors and which I intend to scrap, bar the CPU
http://ark.intel.com...z-1333-MHz-FSB)

So my question is, would my WHS 2011 machine benefit from swapping to the Q8200?
Does WHS make use of 4 cores?

I note that the Q processor is clocked lower than the Duo and has a higher TDP (95 vs 65 watts) so I would want to see an appreciable performance boost for for the extra power consumption as it runs 24/7 of course.
Also, I dont plan on doing any virtualisation on the WHS so that is not an issue.

Appreciate any thoughts

ISO Mounter

12 June 2012 - 01:17 AM

Wondering if anyone has tried this Add-In http://forum.wegotse...57-iso-mounter/
Would be a very useful resource for those of us whom store media (DVDs, BDs and Cds) as .iso files rather than mounting these files on each connected PC
Any views?
