In Topic: Server Backup/Restore with mirrored drives? GPT Disks?

05 March 2012 - 01:28 PM

So I have a twist on this issue I think. I decided to purchase my first SSD and found an OCZ Agility 3 60gb drive on sale at New Egg for $60 with free shipping. I didn't want to run an OS drive and a data drive as my wife primarily uses this particular desktop. I have a Asus Z68 P8Z68 V motherboard with a Core i5 2500k. 8gb of ram. The data drive is a WD Black 640gb hard drive.

I decided to use the intel smart response and use the OCZ drive as a cache drive. I backed up the computer, reinstalled windows and got everything working as intel provides in their manual. Now, when I reinstalled the launchpad, the computer does not backup to the server. it states, "An error prevented backup from creating a snapshot of the volumes on this computer. For more information about this issue, see the event logs on teh computer that you are backing up."

Anyone have any ideas. I know when you set up SSD Caching on Z68, you have to set the bios to raid. Can this be the problem? I chose the "Maximized" option on Intel software rather than the "enhanced" option. Could this be the issue?

In Topic: Virtual Box Question

19 September 2011 - 09:26 AM

I was able to get it installed last night using virtual box, selecting Win764bit, 4gb of ram and two processors.  One thing I notice though is you need to change the resolution of the screen from within Windows 8 so that the metro style apps work.  I couldn't get I.E. 10 from within Metro to work until I upped the resolution, then it did work.  I remembered reading that somewhere in the back of my head and it worked.  On my comp, which has a 1080p 24" montior, it defaulted to 800x600 resolution after install.

does anyone know who to pull up that side menu thing within Metro that was show in the demo with a mouse or keyboard?  I don't have any touch monitors so I can't do it they way they were doing it during the public demo last week.  thanks.

In Topic: New Install of WHS 2011 - Two Questions for the Forum

08 July 2011 - 10:50 PM

1. There is no easy way to change the group name once installed. It can be done but in the end it I do not think it is worth he the pain.

2. By default, it creates the shared folders as part of the lauchpad and not the desktop. One easy work around if you do not want to use the launchpad is to open the shared folders using launchpad, then just drag a desktop shortcut to your desktop from the title bar of the explorer. Crud but it works.

Thanks PC Doc, I should have known #2, must have been a momentary brain fart. Sucks about #1 but at least with homegroups it doesn't really matter.

In Topic: TV Archive in WHS2011

Yeah you're right, by archive they mean "move file". It appears to now just move the recorded tv file from the media center pc to the home server recorded tv folder.

Wonder why they took away the preset conversion options...?? I know there are alternatives but I kind of liked the simple media center UI they had before...

Hey Daleo1 - what are your thoughts? I know you had talked about liking this feature awhile back!!

With the new windows phone 7 app, it would have been great if you could convert the WTV file into a file that the phone could stream through the app. This is unfortunate, I hope they add this feature back in a future update.
