This is exactly the type of situation where a Server Backup of the server's OS drive comes in so handy.

My OffSite drive sets are configured for quick removal.
I used to do the "wait for no activity" thing when my OffSite drives were connected via eSATA, but I really prefer a positive action, with a confirmative response, for disconnecting drives. It's a comfort thing. ![]()

Generally speaking, I would say 'Yes'. It depends on the BIOS of course.
Now, before relying on you spanking new UPS, be certain to test it. Try this first on a spare system if you can, just to prevent any possible damage to your server.
What you do is configure the UPS on the system and then, literally, yank the AC plug from the wall. Yeah, really. Make sure it shuts down the system properly before the battery drains completely.
If all goes well, attach it to the server, configure it, and test again. This is when you would test your BIOS auto-bootup as well.

Yep, the same old story: the more a technology can be used for good, the more it can be used for evil.

I echo what the others have said, particularly the part about backup. There is quite a bit of info on this site regarding backup; highly recommended.

As is so often the case, it all comes back to backup. If you have any concerns at all that you might lose data in a catastrophe, you don't have enough backup.
If I was running SSDs in a business environment, what I would do is establish a schedule for replacing them regularly, perhaps as often as once a year. I might also look into using only SLC SSDs, in which case I bet it would be possible to replace them only every 3 to 5 years.

Can't help but believe a G8 model will be quite a bit more expensive than the AMD ones. To me, one of the most attractive things about the MicroServers is the price to performance ratio. Hope that doesn't get messed up.

I would use WHS2011 over Win8 if, for no other reason, to get bare-metal-restorable client backups.
