In Topic: Poca update now available.

14 November 2010 - 07:37 AM

Here come my comments after a few tries my this new update.

It's still a beta, so it'll be mainly bug reports and suggestions.

File names : they are ok with this RSS feed from BBC http://downloads.bbc...io4/wpr/rss.xml

The XML file including file URLs like and the downloaded file is wpr_<date>.mp3.

However, for this french feed http://www.rtl.fr/po...-yves-calvi.xml, the URL of a podcast is so the file should be something like 7635937487_le-choix-de-yves-calvi-du-12-nov-2010.mp3.

Sadly, it ends up with an awful one :
273073201584.mp3c=INFORMATION&p=RTL_Matin&l3=Le_choix_de_yves_calvi&l4=&media_url=http%3A%2F%2Fmedia.rtl.fr%2Fonline%2Fsound%2F2010%2F1112%2F7635937487_le-choix-de-yves-calvi-du-12-nov-2010.mp3

Customising MP3 tags & file names : seconding nbliblie, I second the suggestion to allow customization of file name first, but also main MP3 tags.

The french radio whose feed is given below is producing files with empty album/title/author tags.

The "Add/Change" podcast dialog could be :

[x] Customize file name : PodcastOfMyFavoriteShow%DATE%
[ ] Customize "author tag" (MP3 only) : Joe Public
etc...

Of course, the file name customization would allow special fields as %MP3 author% is such fields are used and you want your file name to mention it.

Time zone : only a detail. It would be nice to have the "Publish date" shown without any reference to timezone. It's easier to read 08:30 on my WHS compared to 06h30 GMT+2h00 :-)

That's it for today

Hi there
Glad to see that your troubles are stories of the past. Also glad to stumble on this thread and to locate this update.

I'm gonna give it a try ASAP and provide you with my feedback. Hopefully, some issues I had with some podcasts are fixed.

For the record : I love the Poca/WHS/Add-in way because it is independant of the UPNP server. So whether you decide to use Twonky, TVersity, WMC etc ... your podcasts are made available as simple files that every piece of software I've just mentionned knows how to handle.

Hi there

I've tried a couple feeds of podcasts I like.

This one from the BBC works like a charm, I get mp3 downloaded to my one and only "Save folder" for Poca
http://downloads.bbc...ce/how2/rss.xml

I get an updated "Publish date" each time something is posted.

This other one from french RTL station doesn't seem to work. Can you give it a try ?
http://podcast.rtl.fr/laurentgerra.xml
The "publish date" stays blank, and no file appears ??

Btw, and this is something I suggested a couple weeks ago : this xml feed refers to a picture, that serves as a presentation one (see http://media.rtl.fr/...urent-gerra.jpg in the XML file). I'd like Poca to download it when available.
This can be useful for (DLNA) players to show alongside the podcast itself.

Keep up the good work !

Hi everyone

Pretty interesting conversation. My aim with WHS is of course to be the unique DLNA server for the whole apartment but only locally.
Audio and pictures works pretty much correctly. Of course it depends on the DLNA receiver also. Got problems with French's Tabbee and video(low end of an iPad).

What you describe is interesting. Maybe my tablet "Tabbee" having difficulties with some video is related to Twonky, and not the tablet.

I've already given a try to other DLNA server (say TVersity, HomePlayer) but I will look back to them later taking into considerations your remarks.

Hi there. I've registered to the forum for the sake of talking about this very interesting piece of code.

My WHS has become the center of my multimedia experience. Using DLNA, it serves audio and video to a couple devices.

However, not every DLNA server around is capable of handling efficiently podcasts.

The best ones manages to subscribe to a RSS feed, download the X latest entries, and stream them according to the audio/video capability of the devices.

Your plugin is very interesting to me :
. WHS is a central place to store and share medias
. WHS is always on(line)
. with it, the necessity of a podcast-friendly server is no longer required

I'd be happy to give it a try and help improve it.

If you want to try internationalisation, I'd be happy to fix a french translation for you.

Let me try a few suggestions :

1) being able to specify prefix/suffix for downloaded files with variable names : Title of the podcast, etc...

2) flag to create (or not) a subdirectory for each post of an RSS feed

3) linked to 2), download of what is sometimes called the "Media enclosure" attached to each post. It might be handled as an album cover. Example here http://feeds.feedbur...ance5/cdanslair

4) Of course, I haven't tried it, but I'm sure you already took into account audio only podcasts. Ex : http://downloads.bbc...ce/how2/rss.xml

5) Choose the retention for each RSS feed : 1, 3, 10 , 20 ??

That's all for now. Keep me posted.
