I have 3TB drives in mine (not red though). Just format GPT and enjoy the 3TB goodness. You won't lose performance. Stablebit works great with 3TB drives.

Wonder why the name change. Is there something more different between a microserver and a G7?

The G7 coincides with the "generation" such as a DL360 G2-G7. What I find interesting is that the N40L wasn't a G6. I actually found one site that listed the N40L as a G7. Also, G8s are the new servers, so I'm not getting it.

Depending on the level of spinrite checking, you could be looking at days for a 3TB drive. Still worth the time IMO.
