For what it's worth, I tried and tried to add my Synology music share to a new Windows 8 machine's library and nothing worked, until I installed the Zune software on the windows 8 machine, and added the synology music share via the zune software.  Valla!!! it worked.  For what ever reason, Zune will add the folder without a problem!  I love Zune!

Hmmm... this is what I did, set up indexing on the Music Share in Synology

and then I added the share to my music library (via Zune software) and it shows up fine for me (although it does say "unsupported", but I haven't had any troubles yet)

One thought, make sure you set up what ever user account you are using to access the share with "read/write" privledges

hope that helps,

I'll admit, I'm a little un-informed when it comes to encription. I am actually a little more concerned with other's data being put on my machine... who knows what could be in there (viruses, illegal material, etc...). With that said, I am going ahead and giving it a try. I started with a non-sensitive folder containing scans from magazines and books (i call it the book shelf). Its about 75GB in size and taking forever to upload, I started a day and a half ago and so far I have uploaded 2.5GB. At that rate, it will take over a month to get my 75GB up there. I did specify the hours and rate at which it can use my bandwidth, maybe I'll play with that a little to speed things up.

I have music in my Synology Diskstation NAS showing up fine in my windows 7 and windows 8 music Library and I haven't noticed any issues (yet). Make sure you enable indexing on the synology shared folder. In the diskstation software, click on control panel > Shared Folder > then highlight the music folder and click edit. click on the file indexing tab and make sure the enable file indexing box is checked. You should be able to add the music folder to your music library in windows without issue (in my case I added it via the ZUNE control panel).
