How Do I View The Contents of the Backup Drive?

02 February 2012 - 10:35 AM

Has anyone figured out a way to view the actual content on a designated server backup drive?  I am backing up all of my content (Client Backups, Docs, Music, etc.) to an external 500GIG USB HDD.

Although I can see the server backup drive and how much space is used, I can't view the actual files on there.  I've tried accessing from Explorer and even through a command prompt, but it won't allow me to see the contents of the drive.

Is there a way to see this?

WHS 2011 - First Time Client Backup - Taking Too Long?

02 February 2012 - 08:46 AM

Hey Everyone,

I ran the client backup through WHS 2011 last night for the first time. The process was scheduled to begin between 12:00am-6:00am. I also set the Server Backup to begin at 7:00am (assuming that the client backup would complete by 6am).

The client PC is running Windows 7. It is setup on a Wireless-N connection, with fairly decent throughput. As of 7:00am this morning, the client backup was only at 39%. I checked the logs and it looks like it did in fact start the process right around 12:00am. In total, there is about 150GB of data on the Cleint PC.

Is it normal for it to take this long to complete the backup? Considernig that its the first backup, should it take lesser time with each incremental backup?

I've also seen a few posts about "unreliability" with restoring from WHS 2011; some posts talking about using Acronos instead. I'm open to any feedback.

Thanks

Static IP Necessary for Remote Access?

31 January 2012 - 11:56 AM

Hi All,

I just recently completed my first WHS 2011 server build and in the process of getting everything configured. I just finished getting the remote desktop configuration and everything seems to be working fine. I registered a free domain through Microsoft (XXXXXXX.homeserver.com).

Now, my question is this ... is it necessary to get a static IP address assigned to the Server? Currently, the Server is connected directly to the router via ethernet cable. I also have several other clients (i,e, desktops, laptops, tablets) all connected wirelessly. My concern is whether I will run into any issues whenthe Server needs to reboot. I haven't rebooted it yet.. hoping to get some advice before testing this out :)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all,
Sam

WHS 2011 - After installing connector software, prompted for username and pw on client...

28 January 2012 - 01:59 PM

Hi All,

Seeking some help and/or advice on the following issue. I just completed my WHS 2011 build and started the process of running the connector software on each of my machines. After successfully installing the connector software on my desktop PC (windows 7), the computer restarted and booted up - then prompted me for username and password before logging into Windows. I don't recall ever setting up a username and password on the PC. I've had it configured where it has always automatically logged into Windows without requiring credentials.

I had to do a system restore and now hesitant to try to reinstall the connector software. Is there a way to disable the username/password requirement? If not, can someone please advise how to replace the existing one that's on my PC? I assume its in the User Controls section of the Control Panel, but not sure exactly what the path is.

Thanks!

WHS 2011 - Advice on HDD Configuration

24 January 2012 - 02:49 PM

Hi All,

Long time reader - first time poster, so please bear w/ me :) I just ordered a copy of WHS 2011 along with an additional 160 GB HD and plan on installing on my home built HTPC. I've been using my HTPC as my primary media center (running Win7) for the past few years to stream movies and music, but just bought a WD TV Live Hub with a built in 1 TB HDD, so I am migrating all of the data over and intend to repurpose my HTPC primarily for backing up data.

Here is what I have:
Lanbox Lite VF6000BWS Micro ATX
AMD 2.16 GHZ Quad Core Processer
4 GIG RAM
160 GIG Western Digital HDD x 1
500 GIG Western Digital HDD x 2

I've read through several of the forums and trying to determine what the best config is for my purposes. It's a shame the DE is no longer available, and I really don't want to invest in a RAID Controller.

So here are the options that I'm considering (open to thoughts/recommendations)
Option #1:
Install the OS on the 160 GIG HD (system drive)
Mirror the 500 GIG HDs
Add External HD to backup system drive

Option #2:
Install the OS on the 160 GIG HD
Software Raid 0 the two 500 GIG HDs
Add a 1 TB External HDD for backing up the 500 GIG HD x 2

Feel free to share your thoughts/ideas/recommendations!

Thanks,
Sam
