#60468 I Need a Tutorial(s) on Setup & Implementation of a RAC for a HP Proliant...

Posted by cskenney on 19 May 2013 - 05:46 PM

Did you try the manual? http://h10032.www1.h...l/c02948881.pdf

Looks like it does not need anything configured in Bios to work except for DHCP or static IP.

#59065 My first server project

I will offer this advice in regards to HDD choices.  Each person has their own personal preference and that usually determines what they use.

If you are comfortable with the REDS then use them.  if you are looking for opinions on drives then look at this thread. http://homeserversho...and-fail-rates/

#57095 Drobo FS: Is it really a NAS?

Posted by cskenney on 31 March 2013 - 09:18 PM

There are 2 different models in this discussion.  A USB3 attached Drobo and a Drobo FS.  The Drobo FS is an network attached appliance (it's what the original topic started discussing).  At some point revengineer jumped in with a USB3 attached Drobo.  Jim added to the confusion because he talked about both types in his one post.

I use IP reservations in my router to always assign the same IP address to my servers, printers, and NAS devices.

#56146 vga to hdmi adapter works on the microserver

Posted by cskenney on 17 March 2013 - 06:51 PM

http://www.amazon.co...rds=vga to hdmi

5 bucks from amazon.  Only reason why I was looking to use one

thanks on the info for the Red drive.  I was thinking of getting 2 of them and then setting up both drives for a vm of freenas

I may be wrong but I don't think that cable will work.

First note on the product page: NOTE: Your Video card must support digital signal output through VGA port function.

I don't think the VGA port on the Microserver is going to have digital signal output.

Most VGA to HDMI adapters are active devices that convert the analog signals from VGA to the digital signals required for HDMI.

I may be wrong....but I don't think so.  FYI - read the reviews on that device...

#55633 ICY TIP and the HP Microserver

Posted by cskenney on 06 March 2013 - 06:55 PM

ICYDOCK has created an ICY TIP page to demonstrate how their products can be used in the HP Microserver to upgrade the 5.25" drive bay.

ICDOCK ICY TIP

The really neat thing I noticed????  Scroll to the bottom of the page and under More Information is a link to Joe_Miner's blog posting on the Home Server Show site and his use of the DuoSwap MB971SP-B.  How cool is that!

#52661 Modified BIOS for Microserver N40L enables hidden features

Posted by cskenney on 14 January 2013 - 08:04 PM

secondly ...the red light ...was I just unlucky in that the power supply has gone faulty as a result of the attempted flash ?

I went and pulled all the drives from my Microserver.  When powered on the HP logo is blue and it will run through the Microserver splash screen and POST screen.  It eventually gets into a loop as it searches for an OS.

Doing some quick reading the RED logo is a critical failure.  At this point you have a couple of options.

1. Pull out the MB and verify the memory is seated along with all the other connectors to the MB.

2. Call HP as you probably have a faulty system and they will need to replace it.

From my reading if you can't power it on and get past the red logo then you will not be able to do anything.

FYI - I didn't try putting a USB stick into the system to act like I was going to flash the BIOS to see if I would get a RED light.  I didn't really want to experiment and see if I could corrupt my system.  That being said, if I was you I would still try and find another brand of USB stick and try flashing the BIOS again.

#51347 SSD advice, migrating EX490 to WHS2011

Posted by cskenney on 21 December 2012 - 09:18 AM

Personally I would stick with a conventional HDD for the system drive.  It fits the drive tray with no adapter and you can just pop it in.  Is going to an SSD (and using an adapter bracket) going to buy you anything?

#49016 Connect ipad to network?

Posted by cskenney on 15 November 2012 - 08:50 AM

While I enjoy the humor in the previous 2 posts it didn't really offer any help to the original question.

@vertisol - What exactly do you want to do?  Your question is so vague that it is hard to answer.  Please be a little more specific.

#38457 HP N40 Microserver $111.99

Posted by cskenney on 03 April 2012 - 05:44 AM

And now, these people have your Credit Card number too!

I was thinking that too.  However, if the order was processed and the server shipped they still would have your CC number.

#32777 Should I setup my WHS 2011 with a Static IP

Posted by cskenney on 18 December 2011 - 07:55 PM

The method your ISP is using makes no difference for the question you are asking (static vs. dynamic).  Your question is concerning your internal network (the one inside your home).  Most people will either use a static IP address for their server or they will use DHCP Reservation which basically allows your DHCP server to always assign the same IP address to the server.

I think it is fair to say that most people use a static address or DHCP reservation as it is easier to troubleshoot if you have issues.

#19832 Best WHS/MCE Alternatives??

Posted by cskenney on 16 March 2011 - 07:05 PM

I have SageTV running in my house.  I have 1 HD200 extender and 1 HD300 extender.  The HD300 is pretty nice because you can mount it behind a flat screen TV and use the remote IR receiver.

Some comments about SageTV (as a user).
1. The interface isn't as polished and pretty as WMC but it is getting better.
2. Sage to many people still has the feel that it is for enthusiasts (people who like to constantly be messing with their systems).
3. The Sage extenders (HD200 and HD300) work very well.
4. SageTV is not free.  Many people say WMC is free since it is in Windows7.
5. I ran the previous version of SageTV as an add-in on my HP EX485 MSS.  This was a little too much for the server in addition to it's other tasks.  Now I have SageTV running as a service on my core i3 desktop computer.  I don't even notice it is there.

If you have some specific questions about SageTV I would be glad to try and answer them.  There are users in the UK using SageTV.

#13967 Replace HP Media Smart Server System drive

Posted by cskenney on 28 November 2010 - 07:07 AM

There are a few ways to do it.  Make sure you have a recent backup of your critical data.

Andrew Edney has a really good set of instructions on his blog at Usingwindowshomeserver.come.  The blog is called Replacing the System Drive on the HP MediaSmart EX47x series and Performing the 3.0 update.  Make sure you read the comments after the blog post and you can skip the 3.0 upgrade section if you don't have the disks or don't want to do the upgrade.  Also, make sure you have backed up you really critical data to an external disk just in case something goes wrong (you should be doing this anyways).  I believe with this method you have to recreate all your users and re-install your add-ins.

Here is some other way to do the upgrade but it is much more involved.

There is a blog post on MediaSmartServer.net that they describe using Acronis True Image to do specifically what you describe.
