I agree, mostly. Not to be picky, but the one difference I can think of is that Sears often, or at least they used to, has the manufacturers build the appliances to their spec, which means they may not be as reliable, or the feature set may be different from the units sold under the manufacturers own brands. I don't think this is happening with DriveBender. Meh, it's a minor point.

Tranquil states they have tested it extensively with their hardware - so maybe there is some difference in the code. Written to take advantage of their processor, motherboard etc.

Dell still sells it as part of the NAS lines of Server boxes (they are actually full fledge servers being sold as NAS's with WSS2008 as the OS on them

I do a search on Dell for WSS 2008 R2 Essentials it give me noting. Drop "essentials" and I get some hits.

Any idea what model number?

I may have to break down and get an MSDN account.

The whole point of WHS is to restore quickly. A clean install involves many steps: Load OS, updates/patches/ load applications (Where is the software/keys?) etc. This is the whole point of a WHS backup.

Example: A user's PC crashed. They don't want to wait a day while I re-install everything (and this keeps me from doing much else). I want to pop in the restore key and let it do it's thing. The user logs in after 40+ minutes and is on his/her way. Same desktop, same everything.

A clean install destroys their favorites, printer installs, VPN setups etc..

I use WHS at several businesses and just wanted to make sure I could us the same USB key between them. With V1 I just use the CD.
