In Topic: How long will you continue to use WHS 2011 ?

29 December 2012 - 06:19 AM

Not moving off it for the foreseeable future most all of my systems have less than 200gb of data with the server having the larger amount of data I back all of it up other than the client backups without issue.

In Topic: UPS

13 June 2012 - 06:50 PM

I use APC Network based shutdown for my smartups that way my UPS can run my entire lan and power down each PC or equipment in the proper order.

In Topic: Connecting two routers

25 May 2012 - 04:37 PM

I have used ikons option 2 numerous times, Since routers are ussually cheaper than APs it is easier putting in an IP on a new router, connect it to a lan port and let my main router act as the DHCP and DNS server

In Topic: SSDs - What The Fail?

22 May 2012 - 05:59 PM

2x g.skill Falcon. 1st fail was DOA, Newegg swapped, about 1 year later I had another fail after running over my laptop with a car.(dont ask). RMA took about 3-4 weeks. neither I consider to be an outright failure. DOAs happen and I'm pretty sure the second was user error.

I should note that I've owned 11 SSDs.

Should have had a Dell total protection warranty, took care of my laptop taking a swan dive from a 200' high vent stack at a smelter

In Topic: Tips for running and terminating Cat 6 cables.

13 May 2012 - 06:43 PM

I have mine wired with cat6 and no problem at all. I would recommend using the "B" termination scheme as it is the more standard of the 2 scheme and works better in poe situations. currently have 4 hardwire cameras and 6 PC, outside of the ones in my server room. While I wanted to put in a patch panel I opted to use 2 of the 6 port wall plates with the 2 unused ports running the cat 5 out to the fios box and coax for the tv.

For my tools i just use the flat screwdriver blade on my very small swiss army knife, one day i might get a punch down tool but not yet

As for guides if you buy the proper keystones/jacks they should be labeled with a A and B scheme just pick one and stay with it but i recommend B
