In Topic: Upgrade CPU and RAM on HP EX495 WHS 2011

Your best bet is to follow this thread http://www.mediasmar...php?f=25&t=5512 as long as the power temp is 65W or lower, your good.

I installed the E5400 and 4 gig Mushkin. I built my own vga/PS2 cable for a cleaner look.

Whoa John, you didn't mention on UStream the other day the awesome job you did on PS2/VGA port addition to your EX. Now I'm gonna have to tear mine apart and take a look inside it to see what I can do :)

Followed your advice and it shows that it is compatible.

Now the next question is - how do I get it to read from the computer listed above? If I hit reset data base, will that erase what was already collected?

It will reset the data base but when it's finished you will see that there is a long list of things it didn't copy because they are already on the machine. I noticed that after just installing my EX490 and playing around with the different settings. It doesn't recopy, just copies the new items that aren't on the machine.

In Topic: Best Practices for DVD Ripping

29 March 2011 - 06:47 AM

From my client, I use AnyDVD and ImgBurn to rip the DVDs into ISOs. Then I move files to my server. I have an XStreamer that can play the ISO files natively. Also, I have PCs on some of my TVs that can play the movies with VLC media player.

I also have an iPod Touch with a home made rig to send the video output to screens in my car, so I need some files in a compatible M4V format. I use Handbrake to rip the movies I need to the iPod Touch format. For DVDs of shows (like Dora), I'll rip each show to a separate M4V file, so I can mix and match and put a variety of shows on the iPod. I have over 1000 M4V files of children's shows.

The TVs in the car was mainly because we had an hour long commute (one way) and were taking the kids with us to day care.

How do you like your XStreamer? Thinking about maybe getting one or one of their new XStreamer Ultras

In Topic: Icy Dock MB982SPR-2S Dual 2.5” RAID Enclosure

Hi Dave.

I've got my dock running in my new EX490 and installed the raid software. When I open the raid manager it just shows two seperate 500GB drives with no raid configuration (and only 500GB total in server storage on WHS Connector). I set the switches as per the manual, but I'm wondering if I was supposed to hook it up to power in a regular PC and push the reset button to get raid set. I didn't do this, and you don't mention pushing the button until you tried to change raid types. Any ideas?

From what you had described, when you had it set up it looked like when you opened the software it found the raid configuration and no other steps were required.

Thanks and love the podcasts!

I've got it working. Had to pull the dock, hook up to a regular pc, power up with the reset button pressed in until the lights flashed, then power off the pc. Put the dock back into the EX490 and do a fresh system install. Getting quick at system restores now :)

After everything was back up copied the raid manager software over, installed and ran it and now it shows my raid array.

Very cool stuff.
