I would first like to thank all the contrbutors to the Gen8 forums who have helped me so much in the past few weeks along with the YouTube videos I've watched over and over.
Three weeks ago I'd never even heard of a Gen8 Microserver but now I've ordered one (E3-1220Lv2) which will hopefully arrive next week. I've got all the extras (SDD disc and cables) to install an SDD into the ODD slot, I've bought my OS (Windows 10 Pro 64-bit) for my Microserver and transferred it to a USB stick and I've downloaded all the SPP, b120i drivers, iLO, HPSUM updates ready for the install. I've just got a couple of simple questions that hopefully the more experienced on here can help me with.
1. The HDD Config. I was looking at 4 x 4TB WD Red in Raid1 config to give me 8TB of space however once that is used up I'm in trouble so my other thought was to buy 2 x 8TB HDDs.
initially, install them as Raid1 so I have 8TB but be able, when required in the future, to purchase 2 more 8TB to fill the other HDD slots and give me 16TB. I've read that the storage limit in the Gen8 is 16TB but
I'm pretty sure others on this forum have exceeded that.
2. Is it possible to hang an external NAS off the Gen8 server and, if so, how. I'd like to avoid having to install extra cards etc. within the server if possible.
3. If I am going to run a Plex Server on my Gen8 and the Samsung Plex app on my Samsung smart TV do I need a special graphics card to do this (I dont think so but want to be sure).
4. How do you connect external security house cameras to the Gen8 without using a DVR ?
5. I assume, until I've got it fully up and running, I will need to connect a keyboard, mouse and monitor to the Gen8 until I'm able to Remote in from my PC.
I have to say I'm really excited about getting my Gen8 and turning it on for the first time but I'm also scared stiff as well !!!
Many thanks for all your help.
Hi everyone, first post here as a new Gen8 server owner.
Picked up my Gen8 and loaded it with a core i3-2120t CPU with 8gb RAM
I've got 3 WD Green 1TB drives to add, and I'll be using the box as a media server.
I'm waiting for my floppy to sata cable to arrive so I can hook up my 2.5" drive to load either Windows 10 or Windows Server 2012 on to, still deciding.
However in the mean time, I wanted to boot up the machine from my Linux Mint USB drive.
It's running on a Sandisk 64gb USB 3 thumb drive.
It's sort of my go to, diagnostics/testing OS.
I've set it up as a persistent OS on the drive, so what ever PC I'm working on I can just boot from it and all my stuff is there. This works fine on every PC/Mac I've used and worked on.
However, when I come to boot the microserver from USB it just won't do it at all.
I've got the stick in the back USB 2 slot.
I get the following screen
My bios settings are:-
System > USB Control > USB Enabled
System > USB Boot Support > Enabled
System > Removable Flash Medai Boot Sequence > External DriveKeys First
Standard Boot Order IPL
IPL:1 USB DriveKey (C:)
IPL:3 Floppy (A;)
IPL:4 PCI Embedded HP Ethernet 1gb 2-port
IPL:5 Hard Drive C: (See Boot Controller Order)
Boot Control Order
Ctlr:1 PCI Embedded Intel Sata Controller #1
Ctlr:2 PCI Embedded Intel Sata Controller #2
No other options available.
Just can't get this to boot from USB at all.
