Well we now have RTM but the issues still seem to be same. Brand new updates for WHS, RTM, and that garbage photo app still cannot read WHS folders. Come on guys. I hope that a third party that can write software can come with something that works. Still cannot set the size of of the windows, thumbnails. That said, the video now plays, and it is very fast.

I think it's fair to say that all that's been RTM'ed is the Windows 8 platform itself. The M Apps are still crap. Still, being apps, they are each on their own release schedules. However, I'm still not convinced that they will be in a usable state come October 26th.

It seems odd that the same company that's producing the Surface and, arguably, pushing the boundaries of tablets, is also producing such mediocre applications for its new flagship OS.

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.

Why is any of this surprising? With the arguable exception of Office, when has MS produced the best in class software for its platform? Generally they rely on 3rd party developers to handle the applications. On a side note they generally get lambasted by application developers when they put out a competing product in any, category don't they?

I'm not defending MS here just pointing out past history.

Doc - are you talking about the native photo app in Windows 8? Why wouldn't you use Photo Gallery for photo management?

Yep, I'm assuming that he is talking about the "M" Photos App, since it can't deal with pictures held on WHS or network shares.

What really gets my goat about this issue is that the folks who worked on the Windows Photo Gallery application, such as Analy Otero, then moved on to working on the Photos App, and seem to have had a lobotomy. There's nothing in the new app that is an advance, but instead there's just been a massive step backwards.

Meanwhile, The Windows Photo Gallery desktop application has had a new release, and Microsoft still has not fixed a bug that they've acknowledged in 2010, and which has been around for far longer. They've also missed out on an opportunity to deliver an implementation of proposed industry standards on keyword hierarchies and face recognition that was published back in 2010. And Microsoft is one of the founding members of the cross-industry group that developed the standards in the first place.

Microsoft: always snatching defeat from the jaws of victory...

Why are you trying to use the new OS platform with a deprecated server OS? I'll need to invoke the Jobsian theory of "your doing it wrong" use skydrive or photobucket for photo viewing.

The M Apps are still crap

"M" once stood for Metro, but now, thanks to a legal challenge, now stands for Modern.

C'mon, honestly, do try to keep up! :)

Oh, and SkyDrive is useless for photo viewing. It still doesn't expose metadata Tags/Keywords, and you can't filter on them either...

If you feel the need to differentiate, why wouldn't you just call them RT apps? Makes more sense don't you think?

Not what I meant. The pictures app is for viewing. Its a simple photo viewing app that's it. I don't recall windows photo viewer in Win7 being able to use metadata and tags. Skydrive wasn't suggested for viewing, its storage.

The point was, I keep seeing people wanting to make the apps something they are not.

Pot, kettle, black? :)

Thanks for reminding me why I stick to the BYOB forums.

Has anyone come across upgrade issues? I was trying to upgrade a one year old Windows 7 (64 bit) Ultimate desktop to Win 8. All I get is Windows 8 Installation Failed. No errors in event log or anywhere. Ran in diagnostic mode and got the same result. Unless someone tells me something different, I guess I will be starting from scratch.

Seems like I remember that an upgrade was a bad choice and since these are radically different OS's, I'd clean install.

If people are complaining that the supplied apps can't do certain things, perhaps MS has missed the target audience for these apps. Perhaps MS needs to re-evaluate the purpose of the apps and reconfigure them.

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.

I tried the upgrade and it ran fine. have you verified your image isn't corrupted, does it clean install OK?

Seems like I remember that an upgrade was a bad choice and since these are radically different OS's, I'd clean install.

Actually the upgrade works really really well.

What built in Win7 functionality are they using now? If they are using 3rd party software well then there's your answer. Understanding what the apps are is key to how they are to be used. Take the mail app for instance. It's meant to be a unified mail app for aggregation of online(primarily) mail accounts. It's doesn't have all the functionality of say outlook or gmail. Why does Microsoft need to retool this app because you want to use it in a different way than intended?
