I am looking at building a new PC for simple usage, and I want to future proof it for Windows 8 and get a motherboard that supports UEFI. What recommendations for MINI ITX motherboards do you have? I have mainly used Gigabyte and Asus motherboards in the past, but just want something of high quality. Any and all recommendations are appreciated and I will be using an Intel chip, preferably ivy bridge, but could be sandy. I5 of i3, don't need i7. Plan to use the integrated graphics in the chip

Pretty much any Z68 or H77/Z77 will have UEFI on it. Take you pick. Me personally I would use either H77 offering. Unless you want the overclocking, I wouldn't bother with Z77 as it doubles the price.

My experience is that AsRock and Zotac seem to make good boards in this size.

I just bought the AsRock mini iTX for $89 yesterday. Should have it Tuesday. This will be the basis of my new router/firewall as I am upgrading my untangle box.

I've been using UT for several years and it's been great. Other than a few issues getting v8 installed the first time (I was trying to upgrade with a fresh install) I've had no issues. I'm going to implement a UT server at that relative's business where I'm helping out.

I read thru PCDocs post and wondered if I exported all my current settings if I could reimport them back once 9.3 is installed. Not that I have that much special going on, just lazy I guess.

Wouldn't surprise me if you could. Haven't tried it myself but what else would the backup be for?

As far as I know you can. I will be trying (maybe) when I build the box. I have many custom settings such as fixed IP and forwards. The few days I tried the new version is was pretty good. I should be getting my new hardware tomorrow

How much overhead does unTangle require typically? An H77 and 1156 CPU seems to be rather overkill for a router. Would an E-350 or something similar work well?

I've only tested UT in a VM so just wondering....

The answer depends on what you have activated. Features like spam filtering, AV, and phishing modules take some overhead. My Atom 525 did a great job for everything prior to the tunneling feature. I think it would still be enough in terms of power and the only reason I am replacing it is that I am having a drop issues with the internal NIC recently, so rather than replace it with another atom, I opted for a bit more HP. The only measurable way I can tell the overhead is to measure the ping speed vs my Dlink 655. The UT box with the Full version of the AV and most features turned on using the atom went from 9-10ms on the Dlink to 30-40ms on the UT box. I hope to see that reduce with the new hardware. Not a big deal for everyday use but an avid gamer may not like it.

I would agree that an H77 and 1156 are overkill. I forget what CPU I'm running on my UT; it's more than an Atom, but not as much as an i3; a Core2Duo comes to mind, maybe even a P4.

I do not have the full AV running, only the packages that come with the free version. I find the prices of the pay versions kinda high for home use. I would certainly consider the pay versions for a business, but not home.

Yeah I agree but the full AV is not as bad as the rest $108 for the full year. Considering you hit it at the router level it is not bad. One could use the free MS version and add this at the router level for full house protection.

That's because they don't make one...otherwise I'm pretty sure the clown blue and white scheme would be in full effect.
