Does anyone have any experience with using the HighPoint GUI for OCE (Online Capacity Expansion). I added a sixth drive to my array and this is the only way I see to expand the array. It looks to be pretty much point and click, however I would like to be aware of any gotchas.

Time for pcdoc to check in. I'm virtually certain he has done this, and says it works.

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.

Sure have. I did a video on the process. Select OCE, Select RAID 5, Select all 6 drives, and hit the button. Step 2, go on a short trip and come back in 8-10 hours (assuming you use foreground).

I have no doubt you have more than adequate backup in place.

30 hours later the job is done. Only one little hiccup along the way when a drive got a little warm, but at least I know what the alarm on the card sounds like!

The final display of the new array:

One adjustment in the Computer Management Applet to extend the new volume:
http://homeserversho...image/134-oce2/

The new volume:
http://homeserversho...image/135-oce3/

The new drives presented to the WHS running in Hyper-V

And verified in the Computer Management Applet console within WHS:

All is good with a big Thank You to PC Doc!! Now it's time to button up the new Fractal Arc Midi case and move on to the next project.

Was it the drive that got warm or the card? Glad you got it going. Fairly painless after the first time.

It was the drive. I stupidly has it sitting out of the case on a flat surface with no air flow getting to the bottom. Lesson learned.

Whenever I have to leave a drive on a flat surface like a table top of the bottom of a chassis I use one of these:

Syba fan

ThermalTake Mobile Fan

They work like a charm.

BTW, here is the cheap mod I made for my cards. Looks funky but works great of keeping that sucker cool so I can thrash it all day long...

Hi there
I have just added a drive to my array but it is showing the old size rather than the new size.
The option for extending the volume in disk management is greyed out.

You need to provide more details:
  • what type of array?
  • is it on a RAID card? If so, what brand/model?
  • how many drives? What brand, size, model?

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.
