How are you going to get 8 drives in that case?
Windows 7 Desktop - Antec 100 Case, Intel D8H67BL, OCZ 550W PSU, Intel i3-530 CPU w/16GB G-Skill DDR3 1333 RAM
Server 2012 - Fractal Arc Midi, CoolerMaster M600 PSU, ASUS P8H67V, Intel i5-2500 CPU w/32GBG-Skill DDR3 1333 RAM, 90 GIG OCZ SSD OS Drive – Roles: Hyper-V (WHS-SharePoint-DC-SQL-Exchange-WSE 2012), Print Server - Rocket RAID 2720 5x2TB
HTPC Build - Silverstone GD05 Case, ASUS P7H55-M PRO, CoolerMaster M600W PSU, Intel i3-530 CPU w/4GB G-Skill DDR3 1333 RAM. OCZ 60GB SSD Drive for the OS with a 120GB WD 2.5" Blue drive for data storage.

Think about the green drives. Again I have not had a problem with my WD green Ears but I did change the firmware so the heads dont park so much.
WHS2011 Build - Asus M3N72-D Mother Board - AMD 9950 - 4gig Patriot Ram - Corsair HX650 Psu - 2 WD 250 Blacks in a IcyDock MB982SPR-2S in Mirror - High Point Rocket Raid 2680 - 5 2tb EARS in Raid 5 - 2 2tb EARS and 1 EADS in Raid 5 - One 2tb Sammy for internal back ups - Two 1TB WD Backs - Two USB3 Seagate GoFlex 3tb external for Sneaker net backups - Carbonite installed for cloud back ups on the server.

I thought the new Red Series drives were about the same price you mentioned. I've not used the WD Green drives but I think the issue was the heads were parking way too often and the firmware update changed that.

Now that we have a choice, go for the red drives. Otherwise looks like a great system. I have not had any issues with the green but using a drive made for raid without spending a fortune makes sense.

Main Server - WHS 2011, Core I5-2500, 12T RAID 5 (5x3T) + 2T of Mirror + 2T of backup
Second Server - 2008R2, Core I5-2500, 12T RAID 5
Main Systems - Core I7-2600k, 16 Gigs DDR3-1600, 180 Gig Intel 330 SSD Max IOPS 240 Gig Vertex 3, 2T Sata 3 for local Backup
Other systems - Core I7-2600, Core I3-530's, Core I5-2500, Core I7-920, Core I3-2100, and G620 (see System List)

Yes WD gave a small command line exe that allowed you to turn off the constant head parking.

Agreed. I have a relative in the Access Control business. He sells/installs/maintains a lot of industrial DVRs. I just told him he should really look at Red drives for them.

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.

Great solution if you already have the drives. Do you have the link to how to get the software?

The machine is all built out (with the exception of the data drives)...and the OS installed!!!

I actually can't believe how easy it has been so far - knock on wood.

Updates are running now...tonight I will start getting the OS setup - then I install the data drives (that's another $300, so it may have to wait a bit :( )

Right after the OS has updated, I recommend you make an image backup of the drive, just in case.

Back in the day I would use Ghost - what is used today to make drive images?

Ghost is still available AFAIK. However, you can use the built in Windows Server Backup, or Acronis, or a number of utilities out there. I mostly use WHS backup, but I also use Windows Server Backup and Acronis sometimes.

If you want a free solution, look for Hiren's Boot CD which has a version of Ghost on it. Ghost is falling behind in the corporate imaging world with SCCM and WDS taking over those duties.

Yes. SCCM & WDS are going to really alter how corporate computers get deployed. Plunk it down, turn it on, walk away. When the user gets moved in to the office, it's all set and ready to go.

Ok the OS is installed...again!

I installed the OS and mirrored the drive in Disk Manager - but it didn't look right to me...there was a 100 MB partition that didn't get mirrored...hmmm....I don't know much about the mirroring in Windows, so I decided to go in a different direction.

I headed out to Microcenter and bought one of these (same thing as the Icy Dock):

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817990020

Set it to RAID 1 and off I went with a reinstall...prob didn't need to reinstall but oh well...

Now I have a true RAID 1 mirrored OS drive...

As soon as the cables come in I will be setting up the RAID 5 data array of 3x3 TB...whoo!

More updates soon.

That thing looks really cool. Could it look any more like an ordinary 3.5" HDD? I don't think so. It looks like a WD Blue, except it has no black 1/2" dots on it (maybe you could add some) :D

Question: are the drives easy to remove? Is it just a case of opening the door and popping out the drive(s)?

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.

The drives are super easy to remove...

FYI, the setup could not have been easier.

Pop the 2 drives in, select the RAID switch to 1, boot PC and it sees 1 drive...\

I just wonder how I would go about testing this thing?

Power down, pull the second drive out and reboot. This will be the ultimate test.
