When the information that WHS has come to an end I would like at least one other forum to discuss how to go on with home server backups and streaming and so on. Will Windows 8 fill our needs or is Windows 8 Server Essentials the path we need to take? A comparison between the two until Windows 8 is generally available would also be useful, both in the forums and in coming podcasts. Price is of course an issue here.

I am also missing a forum for off-topics and general questions. something that could easily be launched?

Hey PerBear,

We have and we will be discussing more on Windows 8 as a home server alternative. There is a section dedicated to operating systems here and for now that's where the discussions will be. PCDoc has also been testing Storage Spaces extensively and those posts can be found on the blog. Since the demise of WHS is fairly fresh I would just hang with us while we get ready for the next chapter of this podcast and forum. It's not going anywhere though. I explicitly left out Microsoft's name on the podcast and blog just for that very reason. A home server can be built out of just about anything and it will get discussed here.

There is an off topic forum here as well. It's used for phones and camera stuff mainly. Anything storage related tends to have a topic. As with any Microsoft changes, OS release, etc. I take a look at the board, the forums, and subforums and try to adjust accordingly. I'm always open for suggestion as well. I'm already getting requests to create Linux sections for servers like amahi and home grown solutions.

I tried to install Amahi, for a Linux neophyte what an ordeal.

I purchased the Using OS X Lion Server At Home pdf book from wegotserved. It kind of blows me away that
a company so heavily media oriented doesn't have a provision for media in their server product.

I saw a post here or on twitter by a member (?jvk) who is feeling the Synology love. I wonder how many cheers
were given by Synology, Drobo, QNAP, etc. when MS killed WHS?

When I looked at Synology I wondered, how does it run so well on such meager hardware, 256MB RAM and 1.2 GHz processor, wow?

And as it has been said so many times, WHS won't all of a sudden quit working.

I have actually found the Synology hardware to be underpowered. If you try to enable a majority of the features available in the OS I think you'll find the unit struggles to handle it all.

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.

For the price it shouldn't, but with the specs that's what I would expect.

We have a long time before we really have to worry about this however in its current state it will definitely not be Windows 8 IMO. I am still not convinced it is even a good desktop platform much less a home server. As it does not contain client backups, we will need to find other solutions in the future but decisions like this stem creativity and there will probably be dozens. For me I am going to Server 2012 Essentials as soon as I can as I always get stuck with the 10 pc limit. Having full images of each client on central storage is also impractical again a server solution with single file solutions will be required. Time will tell but as I stated, Many years of support still ahead and now is a great time to purchase WHS 2011 due to the aggressive pricing.

Main Server - WHS 2011, Core I5-2500, 12T RAID 5 (5x3T) + 2T of Mirror + 2T of backup
Second Server - 2008R2, Core I5-2500, 12T RAID 5
Main Systems - Core I7-2600k, 16 Gigs DDR3-1600, 180 Gig Intel 330 SSD Max IOPS 240 Gig Vertex 3, 2T Sata 3 for local Backup
Other systems - Core I7-2600, Core I3-530's, Core I5-2500, Core I7-920, Core I3-2100, and G620 (see System List)

Only goes to show how seldom I am visiting the forums.
I am well aware that both versions of WHS will be working until my current servers will shut down due to fatigue. And I am sure that I can transfer both OS to new servers when I need to in the future, Maybe I will be one of the very few users that remain on WHS 2011 AND WHS v1 in ten yeras time, because nothing similar is around or something is around but too expensive and too complicated for a senior citizen?
