Let's say it's transforming. Most of the current features will live in Windows Server 2012 Essentials...at about 4 times the current price.

BTW...last I heard...v1 and 2011 still work. Just making sure everyone was still breathing....

In my case, 10x the price.. and Server Essentials 2012 will be domain only.. been down that road in a home environment and don't care to ever go back.

Just the other day I was thinking about moving everything over to Essentials. I guess I should head to Vegas and play the tables a little!!!

I also just registered the domain homeserveressentials.com

1. Thanks Paul for the fantastic links. I always like to get Paul & Mary Jo's perspective.
2. Good point Jim -- by the time WHS2011 hits EOL we would have been thru 2 or 3 more cycles -- we got lots of time to think this out.
3. Tojoski -- that brings up probably the major thing that annoys me about SBS2011e when messing with it and I assume we'll get it with S2012e -- what to do about "domain" in our hme environment. I guess i need help getting up that learning curve -- how to bend it to my will :D

The big drawback about running the domain at home are the usernames and permissions. It will not meet with the WFE!

It's essential (grin) I maintain essential WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) -- doesn't MS consider these things because it's quite essential :P

That was the great thing about WHS in the small business.. You could deploy it to a mixed network of XP Home, Vista, ect.. and reap the backup benefits...

So I guess now it's Storage Server 2008 that falls into that non-domain category right? And that's only available to OEM's such as Western Digital as an embedded product right?

Oh boy, indeed, that domain issue is bad, with this little update just in (within the hour) from Paul Thurrott:

*UPDATE: Windows Home Server has been cancelled along with Windows Small Business Server Standard. Windows Server 2012 Essentials is indeed an update to Windows Small Server Essentials 2011, and is domain-only, so is not applicable to home users.

You can run it at home but explaining to the family they now have to access data with domain credentials will not be acceptable. Logons to the network will not matter

Not to mention you have to have XP Pro or Vista / Win7 Pro/Ultimate to join a domain.. Not an issue to most of us.. but to the average guy it's a deal breaker.

Hints joining a domain is optional seen here:
http://www.mediasmar...roduct-is-Dead/
But then, one must also skim these, just in case this behavior carries over to the new Windows Server 2012 Essentials:

Yes, they still work, but, for example, they can't backup/restore client PCs that use EFI/GPT technology. I bet the next PC you buy or build will be using EFI/GPT...

The point made in other posts in this thread about WSE requiring a domain is an interesting one, particularly since Microsoft blithely say in their FAQ:

Microsoft is combining the features that were previously only found in Windows Home Server, such as support for DLNA-compliant devices and media streaming, into Windows Server 2012 Essentials and focusing our efforts into making Windows Server 2012 Essentials the ideal first server operating system for both small business and home use—offering an intuitive administration experience, elastic and resilient storage features with Storage Spaces, and robust data protection for the server and client computers

I expect/hope there will be a workaround or hack to address this Domain PIA if it becomes necessary.............................

I'd advise not hacking that one. What has been lost in this also is the death of SBS Standard. Only the Premium model survives.
