Hi guys. My current mid tower P35 Core 2 Duo PC has served me well as an HTPC but I'd like to re-purpose it as a replacement for my P4 Windows Home Server.

So I'd like to build a brand new HTPC. All of my videos and music are streamed from the WHS via gigabit LAN and I don't do any recording, so at this time I don't think I'll include a big spindle drive, although I have one if I need it later.

Can you comment on this potential build?

Thank you!

It all looks good.

I'd be tempted to use a fanless PSU: http://www.Newegg.co...Item=17-151-097

And maybe a smaller case, but that's a matter of preference. The Fractal has a great review rating.

See my Sig line for the Silverstone Case I use. Love it.

The CPU is an overkill for a pure HTPC unless you plan to record/transcode, etc.
Windows 7 Desktop - Antec 100 Case, Intel D8H67BL, OCZ 550W PSU, Intel i3-530 CPU w/16GB G-Skill DDR3 1333 RAM
Server 2012 - Fractal Arc Midi, CoolerMaster M600 PSU, ASUS P8H67V, Intel i5-2500 CPU w/32GBG-Skill DDR3 1333 RAM, 90 GIG OCZ SSD OS Drive – Roles: Hyper-V (WHS-SharePoint-DC-SQL-Exchange-WSE 2012), Print Server - Rocket RAID 2720 5x2TB
HTPC Build - Silverstone GD05 Case, ASUS P7H55-M PRO, CoolerMaster M600W PSU, Intel i3-530 CPU w/4GB G-Skill DDR3 1333 RAM. OCZ 60GB SSD Drive for the OS with a 120GB WD 2.5" Blue drive for data storage.

Looks great except for two things. Based on my tainted past, I would not use the Corsair GT. Corsair has been slow to respond the BSOD issues and my recent round with the GT will not allow me to recommend their products as solid. In my opinion, you are better off with the Intel or Vertex versions of the Sanforce series. I have not tried this particular version of the DDR3 but I have several of thier vengeance sticks that are flaky here on my desk so I have abandoned Corsair memory for the time being and stick with GSkill. As of this writing I have have not had any go bad so all my builds run on Gskill. Just my two cents.

Main Server - WHS 2011, Core I5-2500, 12T RAID 5 (5x3T) + 2T of Mirror + 2T of backup
Second Server - 2008R2, Core I5-2500, 12T RAID 5
Main Systems - Core I7-2600k, 16 Gigs DDR3-1600, 180 Gig Intel 330 SSD Max IOPS 240 Gig Vertex 3, 2T Sata 3 for local Backup
Other systems - Core I7-2600, Core I3-530's, Core I5-2500, Core I7-920, Core I3-2100, and G620 (see System List)

my quick thoughts...

- PSU is too big 400w is plenty
- Why Sandy bridge with a Z77? Unless you're upgrading in a few months, get a Z68
- Do you need the hyper threading and clock speed of the i3? No transcoding or ripping with this box, so no need, go with either the Celeron G540 or Pentium G620 CPUs
- Skip the Corsair SSD get a crucial M4 or samsung 830. Best on the market for the price.
- 8GB of RAM is unnecessary, 4GB would be adequate, but given RAM prices.....whatever
- If the tower floats your boat great, otherwise use some of that money i just saved ya for a nicer case.
