I want to restore my Thinkpad t420s but when I run the restore CD it is unable to find the server. The network drivers appear to have loaded correctly. I made a usb driver ?disk? from the Thinpad and it identifies both my wireless and wired nics. The problem is it just can't find the server. I have tried connecting the server directly to the laptop, connecting the server and the thinkpad to my G router, then the N router, 1 to the G one to the N. I give up. I have manually typed in the name of the server //hpserver and also tried \\hpserver.

Any suggestions?

Are both your server and thinkpad hardwired? If so, if you have a switch or hot key, turn off the wireless and try it again.

Main Server - WHS 2011, Core I5-2500, 12T RAID 5 (5x3T) + 2T of Mirror + 2T of backup
Second Server - 2008R2, Core I5-2500, 12T RAID 5
Main Systems - Core I7-2600k, 16 Gigs DDR3-1600, 180 Gig Intel 330 SSD Max IOPS 240 Gig Vertex 3, 2T Sata 3 for local Backup
Other systems - Core I7-2600, Core I3-530's, Core I5-2500, Core I7-920, Core I3-2100, and G620 (see System List)

Try the server's IP address. When the auto-search times out, select Find Server Manually and type the IP in. I had to do it earlier today.

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.

Thank you both. I have tried both you suggestions with no change. It has to be something with the Thinkpad because I can start the restore no problems on our other laptop.

Both the server and thinkpad are hard wired. Wireless switch turned off.

Gave up trying to get the Thinkpad to work. Just restored it through the other laptop.

I had to do that yesterday with my wife's new SSD drive. The WHS Restore Wizard DVD just doesn't work on her computer. Used mine instead.

And that's why I have Acronis handling the daily backups. I can't be bothered with the hassle of finding the server. Ya, I said it. The allure of single instance just isn't enough anymore. In full disclosure, WHS still performs daily backups, but Acronis is now my go-to backup solution.

My advice? Pick up Acronis TI Home when it's on sale. You will love it. Besides its restore function, the recovery media is great for backing up computers that come in for repair.

I own Acronis and love it. Just haven't used it since getting WHS. That might change, not sure. It was very disappointing having to take the SSD out of the thinkpad and try and get it to stay in the Toshiba laptop just to do the restore. I still like WHS 2011, but find that when I think back to the connector install issues I went through, the server backup's that never would restore properly and now the client restore issues, my belief in WHS is waivering a little. Oh well, I'm sure by next week I'll forget all about it.

I still like WHS, too. It's my home server of choice. But if nothing else, have Acronis backing up alongside WHS. It's more consistent overall with the network, and it's more flexible in that it's able to restore larger partitions to smaller.

This could be nothing more than the network card difference between the two machines.

He was working with a laptop. :)

I think the point is having to troubleshoot, come up with a work around, invoke an MVP...lol. Which I have done on numerous occasions.

AFAIK, restore will not work from wireless. It must be a wired connection.
When the Thinkpad is connected to the network it should get a IP address. After that it should work.

Recently I have seen probelms at home with a new router that some devices dropped off the network or could not connect. In my case the problem appeared that DHCP setting only gives out 20 addresses and I have about 22 devices. Setting some devices to a fixed IP address and increasing the DHCP range fixed my issue. Hope this helps.

Yea.....and the point is? Each one has wired connection and maybe one is not recognized by the server because of lack of driver support....just sayin'

On the Toshiba or my old Compaq laptop and our Desktop they all just work, no questions from WHS during a restore. The Thinkpad required drivers to find the network card. I was able to make a usb disk with the drivers stored on the WHS and once given to the WHS restore it was able to find my network card. I think it was an Intel Gigibit (then a bunch of numbers). I could connect the ethernet cable to my router and see it being assigned an IP address, then unplug it and see the address being released. So I feel comfortable saying the Thinkpad was being assigned an IP address over the wired ethernet connection.

Our router (wrt54gl Tomato) uses static DHCP so all our devices get assigned as static address. Sadly, I remember each devices address. Now that we have two routers, the wrt54gl (tomato) and the new Belkin ??? N (Tomato) router connected I was concerend that might be causing an issue. Both the WHS and the Thinkpad were connected to the Belkin router. The wrt54gl router is the DHCP static server. But since the Toshiba laptop had no issue doing the restore just connected to the Belkin, I'm not sure why the Thhinkpad would.

As a last resort I even connected the thinkpad directly to WHS but it failed to find the server as well. Oh well.

You don't have DHCP enabled on both routers, do you? If you do, I would disable it on one of them. It doesn't really matter which one, but it's not a good idea to have 2 DHCP servers on a LAN.

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.

No, only the WRT54GL has DHCP enabled. The Belkin has DHCP set to disabled. Remember, I chose option 2 :)

Is that router only capable of leasing 20 DHCP IPs? Can't you set the DHCP address range in the router?

Yah, it's set to hand out DHCP address between 192.168.20.200 - 250 and all our devices are in the 192.168.20.100 static DHCP range. We have 4 computers: WHS (...108), Thinkpad (...111), Toshiba (...102), Desktop (...104). Things like our iphones, kindles, tivo, onkyo receiver all get a 200 dynamic DHCP address on request.
