I have a feeling that this one will get you into the forums to argue a few points. We're talking Windows 8 Consumer Preview that should be released at any moment. We go back and forth on many points including running it on desktops and tablets and the old "car vs truck" argument. Voice your opinion in the forums. We also talk about an issue that Jim found using DropBox on a server. Files just started disappearing from a DropBox folder. Listen and find out why.
Run Windows 8 on your iPad

Windows 8 - in my VERY humble opinion, Win8 is what Microsoft needs to bridge the mobile and tablet markets. There will always be a need for desktops/laptops that have the ability to do the heavy lifting and not rely upon cloud storage. We all know that 99% of the masses are not going to have a server in their home so if the market continues to shift to tablet devices, the cloud comes more and more into play which is a revenue generator for those with heavy data needs.

Services such as Carbonite are already being sold as insurance so the concept is not too foreign. Web based and ease of setup is a great selling tool along with only "$5 per month". In short, I will always have a truck, sometimes it needs to be a tow truck, sometimes a MiniVan, and just sometimes one to just ride around the farm in.

With regards to the DropBox discussion, is that service set to auto propagate deletions, or did I hear that wrong? Seems to me it should be like SyncToy or AllWay Sync in that you can configure it for multiple scenarios.

I agree with much of what you're saying.

Windows 8: when placed on the right hardware Windows 8 will be very impressive and I'm beginning to think more and more that it will be a smash hit because it will appeal to the masses and out Apple Apple. 99.99% of the users out there will gravatate to what is easy to use across platforms from their phones -- personal assistants -- ultrabooks -- and on up. A somewhat common interface across all those platforms will make it easy to use. I'm thinking that WHS isn't going away but will evolve into a App or add-on to Win8 that will integrate home & cloud storage based on what the user wants which will no doubt be driven by cost and ease of integration. [Actually, with hyper-v in Windows 8 they could actually load a WHS machine up into Windows 8 (running next to the HTPC machine they have loaded).]

pcdoc,

Do you have allwaysync installed on the server that has the source data or the server that is receiving the data? I can't figure out which one would be most advantageous. Only thing I can think of is whichever one allows you to copy your data with the fewest mapped drives.

I have it on the receiving side although it was mainly out of convenience not a real technical reason. I create a tab for each folder/drive that I want to manage (about 14 of them) and that way I can customize each one if I want.

On to the Windows 8. I may not have a popular opinion however I just tested the release candidate and I am still not yet convinced on the desktop. It will be awesome on the tablet but not seeing that flow on the desktop yet. To agrivate the issues, the apps are still a bit kiddish, and you still can not read photos from your shares.

Regarding the car/truck docking discussion ... that's the real point of ThunderBolt. The promise of exposing the PCIe bus is to allow high performance functionality such as an external GPU. Sony already has such an offering in its VAIO line.

We aren't quite there yet, but long-term I think the hybrid solution that was discussed is the future of computing, even for some relatively high performance situations like gaming.

I am not sure I understand the car/truck discussion. For me it is about speed so I guess I would call it a Pinto/Corvette discussion.

Sometimes you need a PC to do some "heavy lifting" so that's where the truck comes into play.

What would you consider heavy lifting? Would it just be massive amounts of data?

No, ripping, burning, downloading, virtualization, etc. I realize the Server can do all of this, but segregation of duties is also nice. It's purely preference.

I would go a little farther with that. I think it's a bit more than just preference. Separating applications onto their own system, whether real or virtual, is a major way of boosting uptime and reliability. Particularly when you do have to reboot a system, it's nice to know you don't have to affect a lot of applications.

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.

One Word - supercomputer

More Words - Cray Inc. (NASDAQ: CRAY) is an American supercomputer manufacturer based in Seattle, Washington. The company's predecessor, Cray Research, Inc.
