Hi all, Im having a slight problem,

I installed WSUS yesterday on my WHS 2011 and selected everything to be syncronised, and I was meant to uncheck drivers and didnt..

I left my server running the syncronisation overnight and when I woke up its downloaded 70GB`s worth of updates :s

I then went into my sync and unchecked Drivers but since its downloaded another 8GB, How can I stop or see what its downloading and
how much is left if I leave it to download.

My ISP wont be pleased :P

Did you specify which OS's for WSUS to check on? If not, in addition to removing the drivers, this should lighten the load a bit.

It's been awhile since I've been into WSUS, but it seems like there was a filter for a time stamp, i.e., tell the server to only download from a certain date forward.

Im at 85GB Now, so ive stopped the WSUS update service. I went into the sync settings and unchecked all but a few OSs and it was still going.

My ISP wont be happy so I might uninstall WSUS and try again when my bandwith has setttles.

Heres a few SS

Just kill the service until you get it sorted out. That will stop the downloading.

Will your ISP cut you off or just charge you extra for 'overage'?

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.

Doesn't that depend on what the cap is?

If he had exceeded his cap, then yes, or at least severely throttled the connection.

Nice article from the guys over at We Got Served on a typcial WHS/WSUS installaiton.

I don't have enough PCs anymore at home to warrant running a WSUS, but I may look at the article anyway.

Wish my bandwidth wasn't capped. They just increased mine (you know, out of the kindness of their hearts, because they're such generous people) to 100GB/mo. But, they count upload and download when calculating my usage.

It's been a while since I've used WSUS, and there is a way to clean-up the database and free up disk space. At least on older versions, it was a separate download. You'll also want to look at a few areas to try to keep your downloads to a minimum:

Language (most are fine with English only)
Windows versions (pick what you have, and don't download updates for what you don't. Hopefully it's just Windows 7)
Apps (Office, etc. same thing on the versions)
Drivers

I may install it myself just to see how its changed in the past couple of years...

Thanks for your help guys. I just removed the role again, then installed WSUS, gave it permission to revmove the database, and updates.
Then synced with just windows 7 for now and thats solved my problem. I think it was still downloading previous updates that I approved for install.
Next time maybe I shouldnt select all and approve :P
