I am looking to build an HTPC that will be used primarily to play HD films(both via blueray and those stored on hard drive), stream HD films from another PC, play music and some light gaming. I have experience of building PC's but am not sure where to start with an HTPC. I do not have a preference for mini-itx or microATX and I don't feel I need an SSD. I would also like a mini keyboard and remote control solution if you know of any and a digital terrestrial TV receiver. Budget is between $500-700, no monitor required. Any help very much appreciated!

A link to my own build: http://homeserversho...h__1#entry23783. There are plenty of others in the forums, just search for HTPC :)

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.

See my signature line, and I think you will want to re-think that no SSD philosophy.

Sorry but I'm not sure what you mean. Where is your signature line?

It's the light grey text at the bottom of everyone's posts. Not everyone has entered a signature line (I haven't) but, if they have, that's where it is.

I would go with more of what jmwills has with two exceptions. Go with the 2100/2120 sandy bridge using a Z 68 board as they have a Sata 3 controller and definitely go with an SSD for the OS. The difference on an HTPC is staggering.

Main Server - WHS 2011, Core I5-2500, 12T RAID 5 (5x3T) + 2T of Mirror + 2T of backup
Second Server - 2008R2, Core I5-2500, 12T RAID 5
Main Systems - Core I7-2600k, 16 Gigs DDR3-1600, 180 Gig Intel 330 SSD Max IOPS 240 Gig Vertex 3, 2T Sata 3 for local Backup
Other systems - Core I7-2600, Core I3-530's, Core I5-2500, Core I7-920, Core I3-2100, and G620 (see System List)

Mine are approaching 18 months old, but yes a MOBO upgrade would be in order.
