As some of you may know, I am almost and completely unknown to the WHS series. So instead of reading all
the brochure crap, I would like to hear from you guys, who have actually used the products, why would
one want WHS2011 instead of 2008 R2 if we don't take the price into account?

    Please! enlighten me.

Instead of doing a data dump, what do you need the server to do? I think your question can be better answered that way.

    Hmm... about everything? :D

    Tasks for my server:
    Web access
    Web sites
    SFTP server
    DLNA server
    SMB / CIFS shares
    AFP shares would be nice
    Mumble server
    remote torrent
    Possible game server
    Backups
Mail server for the RR 2680

Short list that came into mind.

Server 2008R2 can not perform clients or easily create a web portal for external access to internal resources, WHS can.

WHS has a limitation of 10 connected clients, no restrictions on Server 2008R2. No Domain capabilities in WHS.

File Sharing is pretty much the same and I can't remember if WHS can do DFS, but I think so. So in short, it really depends on what you need. WHS is an OOB solution, ready to go.

    Tasks for my server:
Web access - yes for WHS
Web sites - yes for WHS
SFTP server - yes for both
DLNA server - add in released this week, see the podcast notes
SMB / CIFS shares - yes
    AFP shares would be nice
    Mumble server -?
remote torrent - yes for WHS
Possible game server - yes but why
    Backups - yes for WHS
Mail server for the RR 2680 - if you mean alerts from the card then yes for both

I mean, you can do almost anything with enough registry hacks but how stable is the system. Sounds to me like you need to be running virtual servers to get the best of both worlds.

Well my original desire was an ESXi server with FreeNAS 8 for ZFS storage and iSCSI and 2008 R2 for everything else, but hardware that is able to do I/O pass trough in ESXi is a little scarce.

Hmm. It sounds like WHS might be a product to take a look at. Or maybe Server 8 home edition if one comes. Web Access is an important thing
for me and if it's hard to come by with 2008 R2 then I might have to reconsider my position.

Remember, WHS2011 is based on Server 2008 R2; it just has more capabilities in some areas (and a few less in other areas).

That makes a fair argument and the pricing is WAY different. I think I saw an OEM WHS2011 with just 59€ which is a bargain.

Also remember, 8GB RAM max, 1 CPU, and 10 client computers.

I had not been running WHS long but I am tired of Domain management. I only now have a few users at home and the security and domain hurdles to set up small tasks are too much. WHS 2011 installs just the same as 2008 R2 and seems to support the same hardware. If you are looking for a one server solution without virtuals that will run on low resource hardware then WHS 2011 is it.

I am not sure about email as I run exchange on Server 2003. The future seems to be the cloud for email so I am phasing out my 10 year old email server and will turn it off soon.

Just as a point, you don't have to use 2008 R2 as a domain controller. It works just fine with normal workgroups.

SBS 2011 Standard will setup all the Domain features in one package...nice and easy.

Exchange is certainly pretty heavy duty for home. I run Ability Mail from http://codecrafters.com. Much smaller and lighter weight than Exchange.

I'll assume that's a sarcastic remark as I'm not familiar with the reference.
