Moving V1 from 1T to SSD 60. Steps on doing this.

My V1 WHS Drive0 is a 1T Seagate. Partitioned as 20g and 980g.
What I was thinking of doing was to tell the system to Deactivate the 'D' drive and let WHS move the data to the other drives ( I have plenty of room). Then I could clone the 20G OS to my SSD.
Should I do this?
Is this a good way of doing this?
What do I do with the other 40G on the SSD. Do I leave it unpartitioned or use it?

PC Doc has used Acronis True Image for this with very good success, Search the forums and ye shall find. I believe the version he was using was a free on also. The only caveat I remember from the post was to watch the amount of space allocated to the system reserved partition. They have to match and Acronis wants to do its own thing with regards to this.

I recall pcdoc saying to be sure you use a cloning program that properly understands SSDs. He did use Acronis, but I'm not sure it was free.

You are all correct, TI 2012, it is not free, and it is SSD aware. Works very well for the job. Just used it again the other day for cloning another SSD.

What about my other questions I posted?

Just RoboCopy the data (D Drive) off to the other drives.

I'm confused, Don't I just tell V1 that I plan on Removing the drive and it moves all the data?

First off, let me clarify that I only tested 2011 not V1. V1 does not support trim so I would use an SSD for V1. I should have read the title more carefully.

You can't tell WHSv1 to remove a logical drive, like D:. You have to go into the storage manager and Remove physical drives. Since the D: partition is on the same physical drive as the OS, you won't be able to Remove it.

If there is any data on D: you will have to copy it. However, I seem to recall that WHSv1, with SP3 installed, migrated all data off of D: onto the other drives in the pool. If that's the case then your D: could be empty. In any case, if there is data on it, you will have to copy it off. In that case I again recommend RoboCopy.

PCDoc brought up the one flaw in my idea-TRIM. I forgot all about needing Trim to clean up the drive.
I was all excited on trying out using an SSD on V1. Unless I can figure a work around for SSD Clean up/Trim, I guess I have to table the idea.

V1 for many reasons is not a good candidate for an SSD. Besides lack if trim, it is more particular in being copied than other OS's. Lastly make sure if you ever use cloning for any system that the program will correctly handle the alignment of the SSD. I would not use Robocopy as I do not think is aligns the partitions correctly for an SSD (not sure but I would investigate first). To be safe look for a solution that specifically aligns an SSD.

Your rolling the dice here. v1 plays around with DiskID's and does a few other things. So I would not do it the way your thinking of. You might mess up you DATA. Your best bet is a clean install on the SSD with a 2nd spindle drive as your D, and use a cfg.ini file to max the SSD C: to full. I would give this a try but I don't have a 20 SSD.

The other thing with a SSD ( I think ) is that if you don't have a properly configured cfg.ini file, you need a drive of at least 80 gig ( I believe) for Windows as a minimum for the install or the install will quit.
