Hardware is not an issue. Yodafett suggested OpenFiler last week during the live chat. Between the two available boxes I have here, I can choose the i3 with about 12TB RAID5 serving LUNs to an i5 with another 4TB there.
I am breaking about 2 months work to get this thing working and reliable. All the data is backed up so its just time and that is something I have plenty of, for now.
The documentation for OpenFiler looked fairly straight forward.
