Tried this on the laptop and no good I fear. Not a Net problem!

Is the laptop one of the problem Vista machines?

Until the machines are fully patched, the connector software probably will not work. I owuld not intsall any applications as of yet and just go with the OS to see if it joins.

Intrestingly I just looked on the server and the laptop wasn't installed at all on it. Every other time after failing the PC or laptop was there and usually I have deleted it?

I would download the connector software directly from Microsoft after you fully patch these machines.

I have tried but not found the installer, Will have another go. Tried getting the laptop linked after fully updating and no good. It was on the server this time though.

Out of curiosity, how many switches and stuff are there between the laptop and the server?

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.

I think I can say, but I have a SamKnows/Ofcom BB monitor/tester router installed. (http://www.samknows....roadband/signup) To prevent line testing while we are using the BB all network cables go to it and it detects wireless traffic (You set things up with your router then link to the monitor and change your cables over to it. So as far as I understand that means two cables linking to connected things. All the network cables are about 4/6ft long

I have tried the setup bypassing the monitoring router, simply replacing all the cables back to my router sockets, made no difference.

I thought the Connector Software was available as a separate download with 2001 as was V1, evidently not. My bad.

http://servername/connect is the only way to get it.

I didn't really follow the description, but what I think you should test is to connect the server and 1 of the of client computers to a single switch and try to install. I would keep that SamKnow thing out of the mix while testing - at best it does nothing; at worst it messes it up.

Final try has failed.
I have thrown everything I can think off at it
Changed networking over to the one main router.
V6 is disabled in the controller.
Cat 5e cabling
Rebooted router.
Cleaned Net rebooted ran CCleaner rebooted and ran again.
Downloaded Net and ran update until no more updates.
Ran CCleaner and rebooted,
Disabled firewall on server and PC (also antivirus on PC).
ran install and failed again.

Thanks for all help I give up

Regards
John

My son says as I can see all the PC/laptops from the server and it from them we will be able to get another backup. So I will see what he can come up with before doing anything else. I may also upgrade to 7 and see if that sorts it but not really hopeful! .

Wait...if the Connector is not installing, how will you get "another" backup?
