Yes I am a little behind on my podcast listening, but I was interested in the USB pass through discussion. My new server is a 2008R2 box with HyperV enabled. One of the VM's is my stateside WHS 2011 server. The host has an external 1TB USB attached that is passed through to the 2011 server as client backups, Works fine.



The way I listened to the podcast was that people were having issues doing this....is this correct?



Great discussion on Virtualization..I've been headed that way for a couple of years now. I am amazed how much the little i3 can do with my current build. Cannot wait to get my hands on all the boxes and consolidate everything,

I have not tried it personally but yes, many people have had trouble passing USB through.

I too have not tried it, but the way I heard it is people could only get it to work if they used a 3rd party ($$) utility that works with Server 2008.

No tools needed...just a setting change. Basically what you do is take the drive offline in the host and in the Hyper V client you add a SCSI device corresponding to that device from the host, the Drive is then dedicated to the client as a physical device.

I may have to make a video tutorial on this.

Interesting. I do the same thing for SATA connections that I want to use for SpinRite VM's. In fact, I forgot about the offline bit the last time I was setting up to SR 3 drives. Took me a minute to realize why I wasn't seeing the drives in the VM's :) Didn't realize it works with USB too; it was the bit I thought didn't work with USB, so good to know.

A little clarity here; the challenge is not in getting a VM to use/see a USB attached hard drive. That works with eSata/USB/etc if you offline and add as IDE or SCSI drive (as mentioned by jmwills) just like any other drive. The challenge is in it appearing as a USB attached device. Short of a USB over network solution (of which the software trial at http://www.usb-over-network.com/ works fantastically for making a WHS 2011 restore USB from a WHS 2011 VM) there hasn't been a way to get the VM to recognize the device as a USB attached device.

This might not be a problem for spindle disks if you're just trying to get the VM to recognize the storage. It is a problem when you are trying to get a USB thumb drive recognized as such IOT make a specialized boot device (i.e. WHS 2011 restore drive or Linux ISO USB boot) and/or USB attached/monitored devices such as an UPS.

I thought I mentioned that I take drives offline and use the scsi to get them VM to see it....maybe that was Rich's RPG???
