I saw some had tried using RemoteFX on 2008 server core and of course it didn't work as it is not supported. I decided to give it a whirl on an HD3000 graphics (i.e. i5 2500) only enabled board with 468 MB "dedicated" memory using 2008R2 Standard. One of the requirements for RemoteFX - at least for Win 7 clients - is a separate video card and dedicated memory so I didn't have high hopes.

First let me say that Server 2008R2 did allow me to enable the RemoteFX additional role under Remote Desktop Services. It also let me install the RemoteFX hardware into my Win 7 SP1 VMs. When I attempted to remotely manage one of the VMs from a Hyper-V Manager it gave me a black screen

“Video Remoting was disconnected. The virtual machine is using the 3D video adaptor, which is not supported by the Virtual Machine Connection console.” As stated by MS, this is expected, and leads me to believe it may be working.

Here is the rub: I can't RDP into any machine in which I have installed the RemoteFX hardware. I did see that I may need to add the administrator to the Remote Desktop Users security group (odd, as by default they are already supposed to be enabled) which I will try and post back.

By the way, I'm trying this less for the video upgrade as I'm not using any thin clients and more for the potential USB pass through capability.

Update:
Enabling the users didn't help, but I did have to make some firewall changes. The Remote Desktop for RemoteFX is a different firewall setting than the "vanilla" RDP. I ended up disabling the firewall in my Win7SP1 VM to get it to work. Now for some benchmarks to see if using the integrated graphics in the i5 2500K actually makes a difference...

Now, notice a couple things.
First the score (upper right corner). The score for the disabled was actually higher - some times a LOT higher. Strange I thought but then I looked at the quality and realized it was only 16bit dithering. Compare the fog between the two. With RemoteFX you get translucent, natural looking fog. Without it you get significant banding. And it is a lot more noticeable at speed.
Also notice the FPS (bottom middle) - 8 FPS for not enabled and 22 FPS enabled, and that is at double the color depth!
Something this doesn't show is that I can get sound through the RDP'd virtual OS now as well when using RemoteFX.

Ultimately I'd have to say RemoteFX with only using integrated Sandy Bridge graphics is a big win.

Yes. My post was misleading and out of order. I disabled my firewall initially then discovered there was an additional setting for RemoteFX RDP separate in the firewall from "normal" RDP passage for both in and out settings.

Very cool, just installed a HIS Radeon HD 6570 onto my 08 R2 Server and setup RemoteFX on a W7 Ultimate VM that I use for Media Center Recordings and for my xbox linking.

This card has 2GB of ram so i was able to set it at 1920 x 1200 which gave it 330MB of video ram in RemoteFX and i still have 1.5GB for more how cool

also since i had the case open i installed my Ceton tuner on my MS 08 R2 Server and networked them to the W7 Ult.VM and to another media center , how cool again

In the interem i have just connected a networked usb server to my Host MS 08 server R2 and passed it thru to WHS 2011 VM and am currently using it to connect mControl and Gridjunction
