I'm having difficulty tracking down proper protection software for WHS 2011. Does anyone know of out-and-out supported and successful anti-virus and anti-malware solutions for WHS 2011?

I use MSE on all my in-house PCs along with SpywareBlaster and Spybot Search & Destroy with great success. I have an old SBS 2003 server on which I'm using Rising Anti-Virus due to lack of a bank account for server-based AV. None of my PCs are outright clients of the SBS server nor are they members of its domain, so I don't think the SBS needs more anyway.

I appreciate any suggestions and success stories!

Thanks!

This forum has several options. I have been using the small business version of AVG without a glitch. The new new file server version 2012 now has direct support for the SBS line of products. Although it does not list WHS 2011 it does list SBS 2011 and the product works fine.

Main Server - WHS 2011, Core I5-2500, 12T RAID 5 (5x3T) + 2T of Mirror + 2T of backup
Second Server - 2008R2, Core I5-2500, 12T RAID 5
Main Systems - Core I7-2600k, 16 Gigs DDR3-1600, 180 Gig Intel 330 SSD Max IOPS 240 Gig Vertex 3, 2T Sata 3 for local Backup
Other systems - Core I7-2600, Core I3-530's, Core I5-2500, Core I7-920, Core I3-2100, and G620 (see System List)

I can do others that work fine. That doesn't sound "supported". And the server versions of most products want a number of clients listed in their licenses and charge accordingly. I simply want server protection, not client protection. So far, I'm tempted to fall back on Clam or Rising.

Thanks for your experience, though.

I think Joe Miner has been using ForeFront (Microsoft) quite successfully. There was a thread started a few weeks back on this subject.

Forefront - other than the trialware version - seems to be something one can only get via Technet? And I've yet to see that it's truly supported on WHS 2011...

I am using Forefront. Tinkerguy did a great walk through on installation.
Not sure if it is available outside of Technet or not

Thanks. Still unsupported from all I can decipher. If I'm forced to go unsupported, it's unlikely I'll pay for it. Rising or Clam will get installed until something truly supported comes out, I think.

The other school of thought is that if the server is only being loaded with files that first pass through from a client, and the client is clean, the server will be clean.

Yes, I know. But if I opt not to put on something free and something DOES happen, how silly will I feel? =)

AVG file server does support WHS 2011 and 2008R2. There are no limits to user access. You should contact them before writing this off. From my experience it is a far better solution to anything else out for only $39. No other out there except NOD32 with direct support.

Their site does not list WHS 2011, nor did your original post. I'm sorry if I misunderstood. Their chat function got me to someone who claimed it was supported. But I'm going through their support forum now for confirmation. ESET doesn't even list server 2011 products, let alone WHS 2011. *Shrug*

WHS 2011, btw, has a 32- and 64-bit OS option, correct?

Thanks again.

WHS2011 is 64 bit only.

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.

AVG replied and I'll just link the entire thread here, I guess. It may seem I'm being anal, but I really want to ensure the product will get support on the chosen OS so that I don't get in the midst of a problem and am told, "Well, we really don't support our product on that platform." I've run into that far too often in the professional world. By that standard I'm still not happy with their answer. But, for my home WHS 2011 server I'm starting to play with at home, it will work until such time as something announcing formal support comes out.

Here's the link: http://forums.avg.co...=show&id=179403

BTW, I'll likely buy 2 copies. One for WHS 2011 and one to replace the free Rising anti-virus on my SBS 2003 Premium Server.

Wow, and Dell SMB has it at less than half price: http://accessories.u...102&lid=1342490

Forefront is very lightweight and looks and acts a lot like MSE.
I installed it back in May and it's been great - don't even know it's there.
Every AV I ever used before MSE or Forefront had toooo much bloat and slowed my system down.

I followed this thread and got great support from mikinho setting it up. (And it's FREE w TechNet)

For anyone running AVG or any other server specific AV, can you comment on resource load. Perhaps I am just jaded after working on so many client PCs with crappy AV programs slowing them down, but I am apprehensive about loading an AV program on my server.

My home network is only accessed by either myself or my girlfriend. We all have MSE loaded on our 3 Windows 7 computers and its worked fine. I have only gotten a virus once ever as I have always exercised good "Internet-safety". I really dont feel I need a server AV product, but if I knew there was a good, lightweight one, I would consider it.

I'll look into Forefront if AVG doesn't cut it. I don't have a Technet sub but have a couple of friends who do. I'll ask them how they like it. I think they're just using MSE though? We'll see.

Thanks!

Nod32 Supports WHS2011, atleast the business edition does as I have been running it for quite some time without so much as a hiccup.. My server is also running
Eset Remote Administrator, which is delivering definition updates out to my PC's.

If you look at the downloads for both the home and the business products, "Home Server" is listed as supported OS for both.

They also have a new stripped down, file server antivirus that I haven't tried out yet, as the full product uses very little resources..

I just wish they would create a simplified version of the remote administrator and roll it up into a WHS2011 add-in.. maybe I can hit up my rep at work ;)
