What UPS software is best on a Home Server? I am going to buy a couple of UPSs and am wondering if I am restricted to the model of UPS and software. Thanks.

A lot of people are using Grid Junction. I use it and recommend it. My UPS is an APC model. Check out the link, they have a list of UPS models that are known to work with the add-in.

I have been using Grid Junction for a while...ever since I had the WHS turn off suddenly on me. I like the idea that during the power fluctiations I receive the WHS receives a steady supply of power and I can review the report for any power changes. The WHS also has powered down for me upon a power loss while I wasn't home which is the best part...I leave the WHS on 24/7 and prefer the thought that I don't need to be there in the event of a power loss.

It is the only one to use in my opinion as it is the only one that is an add in.

I was over at Homeserverland and found out that there will be an updated release for WHS V1, version 1.6 and they are working on a brand new version for WHS 2011.

See this thread...

You can use the native UPS support in WHS 2011 to get by. Do not install the garbage that came with your UPS. The native windows stuff works very well. When Grid Junction releases the official version we can that but in the meantime use the native support.

Main Server - WHS 2011, Core I5-2500, 12T RAID 5 (5x3T) + 2T of Mirror + 2T of backup
Second Server - 2008R2, Core I5-2500, 12T RAID 5
Main Systems - Core I7-2600k, 16 Gigs DDR3-1600, 180 Gig Intel 330 SSD Max IOPS 240 Gig Vertex 3, 2T Sata 3 for local Backup
Other systems - Core I7-2600, Core I3-530's, Core I5-2500, Core I7-920, Core I3-2100, and G620 (see System List)

That is what I plan on doing...received all of the new computer parts except for one piece which should arrive tomorrow. I'll be pretty busy next week while on vacation.

I started playing with the native UPS support in W7 today. I am not very impressed. It may work well, but it is an eye sore. I miss the visually appeasing software of my UPS but I don't want to install it. Never happy.

pcdoc, how do you configure the native, WHS 2011 UPS support? My APC UPS is detected as a battery, however I'm not quite sure how to configure it. Tried using APC Powerchute Personal Edition 3.0 but it didn't even shutdown my WHS2011 box according to its own power plan. Please let me know the settings you're using. Thanks in advance.

Goto the control panel, hardware, and power options. Click on "change plan settings" then click on "Change advanced power settings". Scroll to the bottom on list where is says battery and make your changes there. That whole section there pertains to the battery backup. Of course I would test it to make sure the settings work but they do work for me.

Thanks pcdoc. My BATTERY option had become hidden after installing APC's Powerchute Personal Edition 3.0. Would you mind expanding or posting each of your current battery settings as a template for us to use as a reference? Appreciate your help.

If anyone else experienced this, you need to UNINSTALL (and delete driver) fro APC battery in device manager and SCAN FOR NEW HARDWARE CHANGES to restore the HID entry. This in turn restores the battery options in control panel's power settings.

I know I'm reviving an old thread, but I wanted to say thanks to pcdoc for letting me know how to setup the battery backup settings in WHS 2011. My old battery back was too old to work with windows (think 9 pin serial interface) my new one of course has a usb cable.

Do you by chance run your cable modems Ethernet cable through your UPS then to the router?

oh, well, it seems to work with the ethernet cable going from the cable modem to the apc then to the router. I'll just leave it connected this way as I don't see any issue leaving it as is.

We come from very different viewpoints. For me, the only real question is whether it works or not. The WHS built in UPS facility does shut down the computer successfully so..... case closed. It's a UPS; not going to look at it all the time, so don't really care about the visual. I wouldn't say no to a pretty interface, but it's not something I'm looking for either.

If at first you don't succeed, do it like your mother told you.

There are such things as RS-232C (serial) to USB adapters that could possibly be used to connect your UPS to your computer. OTOH, a UPS that's old enough to have a serial interface maybe should be retired anyway ;)
