It works and the install was relatively easy.  I installed Windows 10 Pro x64 on HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen9

I used iLO4 to remote into the ML30 Gen9 and began to install Windows 10 Pro x64 manually (i.e. without using IP) in the following general steps:
Since I had just recently done steps 1-6 not long ago I skipped down and began with Step 5 then skipped to 7 thru 16 below.
Download Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) from Hewlett Packard Enterprise Support Center – Drivers & Software – the current version is 2016.10.0 (24 Oct 2016) – check also threads about SPP at HSS Forum MS Gen8 Load the SPP ISO in “virtual drives” in remote desktop of iLO4 Boot the ML30 Gen9 – with no drives in the ML30 Gen9 in my case – and let SPP run automatically and update all firmware. Shut down the ML30 Gen9 Next: I removed the Samsung 840 Pro 256GB that I had loaded Server 2016 on (giving me the flexibility to switch OS’s by switching SSD’s in the ML30 Gen9) and loaded another Samsung 840 Pro 256GB into drive 1 of the Icy Dock ToughArmor MB994SP-4SB-1 Go to the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Support Center – Drivers & Software – and download the file cp028631.exe that is the Dynamic Smart Array B140i Controller Driver for 64-bit Microsoft Windows Server 2012/2016 Editions (This is the same driver I plan to use for a manual installation of Windows 10 64-bit Pro in the ML30 Gen9 – the HPE Drivers & Software site does not have Drivers & Software for non-server OS’s) – the current version is 62.12.0.64 (24 Oct 2016) Extract the files in cp028631.exe and load those into a file folder that I then attach/load in “virtual drives” of remote desktop of iLO4 (during Windows install this will be the folder I browse to so that Windows 10 can pull in the driver and see the Samsung 840 Pro Load the Windows 10 Pro x64 ISO in “virtual drives” of remote desktop of iLO4 Boot the ML30 Gen9 During boot go into IP (press F10) and select SSA (Smart Storage Administrator) In SSA I set up the Samsung 840 Pro as a single drive RAID0 to be used as my OS drive. Exit SSA & IP and Restart the ML30 Gen9 Proceed with the normal Windows 10 Pro x64 install – During install Windows 10 will ask for location of drivers so it can see the drive(s) – in browse lead it to the location to the file folder of B140i driver(s) in the “virtual drives” C: -- if your OS drive had been previously formatted as MBR you will have to delete that so it can be formatted as GPT.  After Windows 10 is installed and updated – reattach SPP ISO in remote desktop of iLO4 In the Windows desktop go to the SPP ISO in File Explorer and Execute the Batch file for HPSUM (i.e. execute: launch_hpsum.bat as Administrator) – I chose “Localhost Guided Update” – Automatic Mode After running HPSUM (and rebooting) the HPE software installed will be visible in iLO4.  Enjoy!

After the installation of the ToughArmor MB994SP-4SB-1 I used iLO4 to remote into my ML30 Gen9 and began to install Windows Server 2016 manually (i.e. without using IP) http://homeservershow.com/install-icy-dock-mb994sp-4sb-1-in-hpe-proliant-ml30-gen9.html

I updated the Firmware with SPP then installed S2016 then updated the drivers with HPSUM.

Icy Dock MB994SP-4SB-1 in ML30 Gen9

15 posts in this topic

I decided to try using an Icy Dock MB994SP-4SB-1 in my ProLiant ML30 Gen9 to hold my two SSDs that I have in a RAID0 running Server 2012R2

Seems to work pretty well so far -- should work too in the ML10v2 though I haven't tried it yet

Nice.  I ordered the exact same cage at the time I ordered my ML10 v2 (which is en route).

I'm migrating all my drives over from the MicroServer Gen8.  The SSDs will continue to be the OS drive(s) off the onboard B140i controller.  The four platter drives RAID-5 array will be preserved on the P222 controller.

I got the ExpressCage MB324SP-B for mine. Fits well, but the power cable needed a bit of a twist to have it fit both this and the DVD.

Got 3 SSD's in it (slot 1, 2 and 4), a Samsung 850 Pro and 2 Crucial's (can't remember exact models at the moment), but ones about 500gb and other 250gb. Anyway, the disks in slot 1 and 2 seem to flash the blue disk activity light when there is disk access, however the disk in slot 4 just shows a solid blue light. Not sure if that's because of the disk, or maybe theres a fault / bug. I need to swap the disks around a little to check.

This is the beginning of my new project.  Note:  I'm a little disappointed in the 4-bay IcyDock as compared to the one I had on my NL40 Microserver; the slim optical drive/2x 2.5" dock used metal drive sleds, was more solid., and IMO, had nicer indicator lights  This one isn't bad mind you; I'd just like them to make it similar to the one I had then.  Joe, it looks like you have a different model than I do, and have the metal trays.  I'm going to have to look back and see if they have another version.

Aaaand, for some reason I'm not able to add a new gallery, and so cannot attach photos (nothing happens in FireFox or Chrome).  Going to have to figure this out before I post a picture.  And I now realize that IcyDock makes two models of 4 x 2.5" docks; I got the MB324SP-B instead of the ToughArmor; had I realized they made two, I would have gone with the MB994SP-4S, like iAndrews.

I've got the same issue, I'm beginning to think only Moderators can post/attach pictures. Maybe Joe_Minor can confirm this?

I also can't post photos, I tried when I did my post above, but it didn't work.

Also, my cage is the MB324SP-B (which is the ExpressCage) which has the plastic (but quick to mount a disk in) trays.

Is the problem you can't post a photo in the topic thread or that you can't add photos to the gallery so that you can use them in a topic thread?

I seem to be able to post a pic if I pull it from some place like my public drop box folder.

I can't seem to add new galleries in addition to my old ones.  And I can't drag and drop pictures on top of a post either.

I believe linking from an external source would work.

I tried it too and am experiencing the same as LoneWolf.

Interestingly enough, attachments *do* work in the For Sale area --I just tried it.

Try it here....Dave found an issue and fixed it.  However, I don't think you can add or start a new Gallery.  Still working on that one.

If I drag-and-drop an image, or attempt to, I get "You are not allowed to use that extension in this community".

Tried with JPG and PNG.

And now for mine - SilverFox, with the IcyDock ExpressCage in an ML310e Gen8 v2 (which should also work in all three servers).

The picture shows two drives, but after deciding I wanted a bit more redundancy (when a disk in my boot RAID-0 failed shortly after a controller change), I now have all four bays filled, and am running a RAID-10, which hosts the main OS (2012 R2. Standard with the Essentials Role added, and HyperV).  Both my 5.25" cage and the IcyDock are running off a Smart Array P420.
