Chris Lux – My Time On The Home Server Show Podcast
When I heard the first description of Windows Home Server, it fit into my vision of home computing perfectly. I had an old machine sitting around just asking for the beta to be installed. My first experiences were so positive that I bought the OEM from Newegg in the first week it was available. It seemed a bit of a lonely obsession since I knew no-one else who had even heard of Windows Home Server, let alone wanted to talk about it. As a regular podcast listener, I had subscribed to Ian Dixon’s Media Center Show for months. He mentioned a new podcast covering home server and I was in. I have listened to the Home Server Show Podcast from the first episode. I’ll admit, I loved the content but found the show a bit boring because it didn’t feel interactive to me. I kept listening and started to send in questions to Dave in an effort to engage the podcast a bit. Dave was certainly receptive.
I was on vacation from medical school in December of 2009 when Dave invited listeners to join in on a recording of the show. I was thrilled. I immediately drove out to Fry’s and spent way more than my shoe-string budget could handle at the time on a head set and microphone so I would sound good on the show. Show 28, which started out as a random group of home server enthusiasts became the start of a regular group of hosts that would last for the next year and a half. We all became regular bloggers contributing stories when we could and we started Skyping together after the show becoming good friends over time. I managed to rig up a network connection in Kenya for show 45 and have an appearance on the Media Center Show (Show 214) in 2009. Certainly a highlight for me was meeting with Jim and Dave in Las Vegas for the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show. I’ve certainly loved every moment of it.
Those of you who are regular listeners to the show know that I have completed my medical degree and have started my residency at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. While medical school was a challenging time to try to be a regular contributor to the podcast, residency has proved to be a greater demand on my time. Working an average of 80 hours a week makes me an unreliable host for the show. I want to announce that I will be stepping down from the list of regular hosts for the foreseeable future. I will certainly come back on as a guest host when and if time allows and if Dave will have me. I certainly won’t let my enthusiasm for the home server and media center die and will share that with you all when possible. It has been a honor and a privilege being a contributor to this podcast, blog, and forum. Thank you Dave, John, Jim and the whole community for such a wonderful experience.
