BYOB Episode 82

nVida GTX680, AMD Opteron, and a whole bunch off SSD talk on this weeks BYOB Podcast

Cheap Server CPU – Yes Please!

AMD has introduced a new line of CPU products aimed more at the business server crowd but still worth looking at for those of us wanting mini-me business systems at home. The Opteron 3200 Series. With low TDP (45w), High core counts (4-8), and budget pricing (how does $99 grab ya?). The Opteron 3200 series looks to be a great alternative for home server setups. AM3+ socket mobos are fairly cheap, including the beefy server class ones with all the RAM slots and NICs. Add to that rock bottom RAM and Bulldozer quad and octo cores. you have a pretty compelling system for not a lot of cash. VM server? Worth taking a look for your next build.

nVidia GTX680 – The New King of the Hill

The reports of the GTX680 are it’s the card to have for high end gaming, if you can find one. With a competitive price point, low watts, low temps, high performance, it sure looks like a winner. Though if you’re running last gen GPU in SLi or CrossFire an upgrade to a single card may not cut it. Especially for High Res/ Eyefinity setups. On the up side nVidia can run up to 4 monitors off of a single card. Something an AMD GPU has been capable of for years now. Still it’s a winner.

Plextor M3 looks to be a strong drive

The OCZ Vertex4 with the revised Indilinx Everest 2 controller shows a strong comeback to the weak debut of the original Everest controller (Petrol and Octane)

Testing Mayhem – Still Holding Out on That SSD?

With some wicked sales on top notch SSDs Michael jumps onto a pair of Crucial M4s and tests them against his old drives and some fast HDDs for kicks.
