MediaSmart Server High Resolution Photos with Seadragon

Microsoft Labs has released a fun tool called Seadragon. If there is a hi-res image on the web you can enter it into Seadragon and drag, click, zoom, scroll, you name it. I’ve included one of my MSS images so you can play with it. Sea more Seadragon here. (Sea? did you catch that?)

Add-In: WHS Port Forward
July 30, 2009 by
Filed under Add-In, Windows Home Server

Alex Kuretz, of the community website MediaSmartServer.net, has released a new Add-In for Windows Home Server. We spoke about this new release in podcast 51 and here is your first look at WHS Port Forward.
It allows the user to utilize the UPnP feature of Windows Home Server to open forwarded ports from your router to your Home Server. This is useful if you have installed a 3rd party application that requires incoming access from the internet. This Add-In removes the need to assign a static IP address to your server or manually forward ports on your router. Simply configure the port you would like forwarded, and let Windows Home Server handle it for you.
Check out the entire description of WHS Port Forward at MediaSmartServer.net and listen to Alex describe it in detail on podcast 51!

Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 Survey
July 24, 2009 by

In show 50 we discussed running PP3 on production servers versus a test environment. I threw together a quick survey to hopefully get some insight on how PP3 is being tested. Please take a second to indicate how you are running PP3 and I’ll announce the results on the next podcast.
There is an option to leave your email address at the end of the survey but that’s not what I’m looking for. You can enter your first name or online name if you want. Simply ignore the e-mail option.

Free Offsite Backup For Windows Home Server With Live Mesh

**UPDATE** Jim and Chris have uncovered a limitation while testing this theory. There is a 2 gig single file size limit to Live Mesh. We are working on a solution and will post it when we come up with one. In the mean time, don’t beat your brains out trying to make this work. **
There has been a fair amount of buzz surrounding the integration of Windows Home Server and Live Mesh. If Mesh had unlimited storage potential or your only had 5 gigs of data to backup, it would be a great solution for offsite backup. There are pay options like Keepvault, Jungle Disk and others, but most of us like to hold on to our hard earned dollars. Most of us also know someone with extra hard drive space or even room on their home server that they would be willing to share. This post describes how you can establish an offsite backup of files on your home server for free to another machine using live mesh. The components used are NTBackup (part of WHS) and Live Mesh. Let’s get started.

HP MediaSmart LX195 Home Server w/ 640GB Hard Drive $199.99 Free Shipping

Thanks to a tip from my good friend and co-host partner Chris Lux over at the Home Server Show, you can now get the HP MediaSmart LX195 for the bargain basement price of $199. The deal is most likely a short one so you will need to act fast!
As we have discussed on the podcast before, the LX195 is a bit underpowered with the 1.6 Ghz Atom processor and only 1 GB of RAM. It does come with a 640 GB hard drive and 4 USB ports that limit your total storage to only the physical size of each external drive. Practically speaking, that would be around 4 to 8 TB. The HP software is an added plus, but it doesn’t have enough juice to handle the newest 2.5 version update from HP. But hey, it’s $200!

Another PP3 MCE visual tweak.
July 22, 2009 by diehard

Ian Dixon over at The Digital Lifestyle.com posted an article he found at hack7mc.com, that uses a tiny app to modify the Media Center start strips.
I like how in a previous build of PP3 beta, both icons are on the Main MCE Page. So I used this app to delete the “Home Server” strip and make a new” “MediaSmart Server” strip with both icons on the Main Page. You can Do the same and call it whatever you like, Aspire, Tranquil, Home Build Server.
This is what I got;
This was done in less than 5 minutes. You can do much more with this app, so get creative.
Thanks to Ian Dixon & Hack7mc.
Follow the link and enjoy.
