I have finally set out to do what I’ve said I would do since I started this Podcast. Yes, I’m finally going to try a Media Center/Windows Home Server Add-In. I love my Media Center and I love my Windows Home Server. The problem is they don’t love each other. Enter Rick Drasch’s Recorded TV Manager. Recorded TV Manager is designed specifically for home networks that include one or more Windows Media Center machines which record television programming for later viewing ("time shifting"). Read the entire review after the the click.

The Zune will not die with the recent Microsoft cutbacks

I’m a huge Zune fan so you know I post about it when I see news!
As per Microsoft and reported by Engadget, the next generation of Zune hardware and software are “on track.”
"Every time anything comes up, there is a set of people who pull a Chicken Little and say, ‘The Sky is Falling. Zune is dead,’ " he said. "The fact is we are on track to deliver the next generation of Zune innovation in software and hardware."
"The planning is fast and furious," he said. "We will deliver progress this calendar year."

January Update available to Windows Home Server users
January 27, 2009 by Homeserver
Today at the Microsoft Windows Home Server Team blog it was announced that there is a small January update that has been released. The Knowledge Base article (#958926) for this update will be posted shortly at this link.
Don’t get too excited it’s a maintenance update but it could be a welcome update for anyone experiencing the following:
The update improves the capability of Windows Home Server to repair abnormalities detected in the home computer backup database. The update should be automatically downloaded and installed on your home server over the next several days, if you have Windows Update turned on. You can check if you have Windows Update turned on, by opening the Windows Home Server Console – Settings – General page.
If you would like to see the WHS Team post it can be found here.

Here are the posts from last week.
Podcast – The Home Server Show 31 – Thoughts about CES and Microsoft Cutbacks
Video – Microsoft Press Booth Hardware Tour at CES 2009
Video – CES Interview with Microsoft about future Windows Home Server Hardware
News – Sony PS3 new firmware new photo gallery slideshows based on photo content
Video – Powermat at CES 2009
I’m not sure how I’ll move forward with this new segment but I would certainly like to overview my recent posts and maybe offer up a bit of news here and there. Take a look at the comments for Show 31. Listener CDMan sent in a link to a Windows Home Server review that I found amusing. Take a look.
Spotted at CES!
I mentioned Xavier from notebooks.com in show 30. I was browsing his blog recently and found a nice blurry shot of me in one of his CES photos! Check out his post here. He did a real nice job on the photos. There are a lot of people mentioned in this post! Look for the next-to-last photo, blurry green shirt guy on the right. I’m blurry because I didn’t win the HP Mini! That’s what was going on in the photo, Warren Crocker, took home the last of the Mini’s that were given away by HP.

UPDATE: According to Engadget this update is ready for download. The gallery application is 140MB so be ready for that. I have not seen an official release on the PS3 blog.
Are you kidding me? Sony’s new photo gallery application for the PS3 not only can sort by EXIF information in photographs but also by actual photo content including, colors, the number of people in the photo, the age of the person in the photo, and facial expressions. The update is upcoming and there is no date yet but hit the link for the PS3 Blog post and a video of the technology. The update also supports DivX 3.11 playback.

Powermat at CES 2009

Here is something a little different for us at homeservershow.com. Tell me what you think of this format of video and presentation.
Powermat was only open to press so I thought I would publish a small piece about the product. It’s not due out until late 2009 and the models I looked at were all hand made. Look for the case surrounding the Blackberry. The case holds the technology that allows the battery to charge wirelessly. It looks like a promising technology but it’s got some things to work out. When the market moves to a battery that has this built in I think you will see this kind of stuff take off.
Feel free to comment on Powermat and if you like this format of reporting/presentation. The YouTube edition is after the click.
No more tangled mess of cords or searching for the right adaptor, simply place your enabled device on the Powermat to charge. Featuring a full range of wireless charging solutions for all your favorite devices, Powermat is compatible with iPhone, BlackBerry, MP3 players, cell phones, headsets, hand held electronic games, digital cameras, GPS units, and laptops. Whether you charge at home, at the office, on the road, or in all of these places, Powermat has a solution for you.
Powermat technology will revolutionize the way we charge.
