HP MediaSmart Server Webinar HP EX 470 for $464.99!

June 25th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Add-In, Windows Home Server

The live webinar is over and there are a couple of points that I would like to share with you.

The biggest was an announcement by Allen Buckner of HP that PP1 and the HP update will be released in the “coming weeks.” That is a direct quote. He stated that they have synchronized the HP release with PP1 in order to save time by only releasing one version instead of multiple. PP1 Beta, non PP1, PP1 RC, etc.

That’s good news.

Also, there is a New Egg offer of $75 off a WHS. Check the slide below.  I have a previous post of offers on WHS at Newegg.  Click and put in the promo code of HP75MS.  At checkout apply the promo code and your total will be $464.99 with FREE Shipping!!!  Awesome deal.  Click the link below.

I will post a full synopsis of the webinar as well as the question and answer session.  Stay Tuned!

Dave

Here is the Q&A session, well, it’s most of it anyway.

BitDefender Total Security 2009 Beta Release 2

June 17th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Windows Home Server

WGS reported on a BitDefender beta on May 31st. Release 2 has hit the site and is ready for download. If your not registered with BitDefender click here and get signed up. They have a great product. It is not necessarily dubbed a Windows Home Server product but they make a great client product. If you already have a PP1 test network you might want to give it a try.

By participating in this campaign you will get an exclusive preview of a whole set of brand new features that we invite you to put to the test:

• Online Backup: you can back up sensitive data online to keep it safe in case of unfortunate events such as computer theft or hard drive failure. This beta release will include Online Backup for Windows 32b systems, but beta 2 will include this feature in both 32b and 64b installation kits.

• Increased privacy protection through Instant Messaging Encryption: you can make sure that no one eavesdrops on the instant messaging traffic between your PC and another machine on which BitDefender is installed. BitDefender Total Security 2009 supports Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 and Windows Live Messenger 8.5.

• Increased Storage Protection with File Vault: you can securely store personal information or sensitive files on your computer, making them invulnerable to theft or to a security breach.

• More control via home network management: you can manage the security of your home network from a single location. This allows you to remotely configure the BitDefender software from other computers in the network and to schedule and run tasks such as scans, tune-up and update.

• Other Improvements: an improved Gamer mode, a Laptop mode, increased performance with lower resources consumption, enhanced usability, and firewall (IDS and IPv6 support) support.

We would also welcome any ideas and feedback regarding the usability of the product’s new user interface. Before submitting bugs, please read carefully the list of known issues and the proposed test cases available in your on your account on the beta website

The next beta will include an extended list of new features which will further improve your interaction with the product.

In order to be able to submit feature requests and bug reports, you need to create a BitDefender beta tester account (http://beta.bitdefender.com). If you already have an account from a previous BitDefender beta campaign, please use the same username and password. Please note that the bugs you submit will be confirmed fixed and marked as such in the next beta release.

Microsoft Windows Home Server saves the Home Server Podcast!!!

June 13th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Windows Home Server

It is true.  Today, I used my Windows Home Server to bail me out and help publish podcast number 5.  Let me set this up, it won’t take long.

I use Audacity to record and mix the podcast.  Audacity creates a project file and a folder of data files for the audio for each recording that you save.  If you save a project you must have both in order to re-open it.  You can open the data files and re-build a project but that is time consuming.

I had previously created the opening sequence of the podcast where the music plays, then the volume lowers while I introduce the podcast and then it resumes normal volume and fades out eventually.  I use this same project for every podcast.  Ok, the scene of the disaster is set.

After recording show 4 I decided to clean up Podcast Land.  Somehow I deleted the data folder leaving only the project file.  Without the data folder, we have no intro.  (Ok, the enthusiasts out there will no doubt be thinking, “Hey Dave, rip the intro from a previous podcast.”)  Yes, I could do that but not when Windows Home Server can save the day!

Instead of spending 10 to 15 minutes re-mixing I simply loaded a backup from about 10 days ago and Bingo!  There was my data folder, all nice and tucked away inside my trusty Windows Home Server.  Drag and drop restore and we now have episode number 5 with my geeky intro.

Big deal?  This instance, no, not really.  But!  If this had been my accounting data, customer data, or other vital files then it would have been a big deal.   This scenario solidifies the reason why I purchased the server, and more importantly why I have embraced the technology and have chosen to spend all this time podcasting about it.  Thank you trusty server.  Rest for now, but wake up tonight at midnight to backup episode 5!
